Simple strap hardware solves problems

Pros: Cheap! Holds 3 bikes, but more like 2 on my 2000 Sentra w/ spoiler. Fits over most car spoilers. Folds and is easy to store.
Cons: The six straps are a pain to adjust. Bottom support rests on my license plate. Bike hold downs move around.

I bought this because it was the cheapest three bike trunk rack I could find. Over all, I'm happy. Unfortunately, like another reviewer here, the straps kept coming loose, even after I did as the manual said and tie things off in knots. This is most likely due to the foam compressing under load or the knots tightening and creating slack.

After a trip to REI, I fit two triglide rings to each of the top straps and one of the side straps. After adjusted to my car's trunk, I looped the straps through each triglide buckle twice. So that's three layers of webbing in each buckle. This also means I looped the webbing through the hooks, and the ladder locks bolted to the rack. The result is nice, dense, non adjusting, triple 1" webbing straps. This also means that I now have 3 straps less to worry about. I added two triglide buckle to each of the remaining three straps. Unlike the other straps, I didn't go through the triglides twice. Spacing them widely apart and going through them just once keeps the straps snug and secure, though a bit of a pain to adjust. If I had to do it again, I'd probably buy six or three 1" ratcheting or metal cam buckle straps. This of course would put me close to the price range of higher end racks. But for a few dollars, triglides can do the job. It also looks very tidy as there are no extra bits flapping in the wind.

Sadly, on my car, the bottom foam bar rests directly on my license plate. So it is slowly rubbing the paint away underneath it. A total bummer. I plan on adding a closed cell foam pad underneath it to put that to an end.

The bike hold downs do move about. Once I figure out what the best distances are for our bikes, a few inches of PVC pipe and or zip ties are probably in my future. I also picked up some 60" side release buckle straps to loop through the bike wheels to prevent spinning. A small patch of grip tape to the bottom support tube prevents scratching from chain rings and denting of seat tubes.

In the end, it's three stars. It's the little things that make a rack easy to use. This one lacks very much so the little things. But, a little thought and very inexpensive bits will make things right for existing owners. For the tinkerers, here's your canvas. :)

Bike Rack

The bike rack works really well with our Cavalier, not so great with our Suburban. We used it the day it arrived with two bikes on the back of a Suburban and it held for the few miles we needed to travel, but would have fallen off if we had further to go. The back wiper blade assembly was in the way of mounting the rack correctly. The rack does work great on the smaller car with a trunk!

Rating :

good bike rack

This rack is easy to put on the car. We traveled about 600 miles with 2 bikes on the rack. The 2 bottom straps tend to loosen up a bit after putting the bikes on, so it's a good idea to check on them when making stops. We also used some bungie cords for some extra security to keep the bikes attached to the rack. We had no problems with the rack or the bikes moving around. Overall, a good product for the price.

Excelent buy

Very easy to install, very stable, It doesn't damage the car and the bikes arrive safely to their destination all the time. highly recommended.

Good for the money

I used this rack on my Nissan Sentra to carry 2 bikes about 2,500 miles. It was very easy to put on and take off of the car, and the bikes were very sturdy. The only thing that I didn't like was that the bottom straps couldn't seem to stay tight, so everytime I stopped I would have to go out and tighten them again. I would recommend using extra ropes to tie the bike tires together so they don't spin while you're driving. Overall I was very satisfied with this rack and am glad I purchased it. It held up very well throughout the drive, just remember to check on it every once in a while, especially if it is very windy because the bikes tend to slide back on the bars a bit.

Just what I expected

For the amount I paid for this, I wasn't expecting a perfectly crafted high-end bike rack. I have a Toyota Matrix, fitting to the back hatch is a little tricky, but it is perfect for what I need/expected. I would be nervous putting more than 2 bikes on it, the straps seem to loosen up pretty easily (again, not high end), and I find myself tightening them every day (whether we've had bikes on the rack or not). I have had it on my car continuously for 3 weeks now, and it has made toting around my teenager's BMX bike much more pleasant (and the dog appreciates having the back seat to himself!)

consider this before buying

If you plan on carrying 3 bikes on this bike rack, DO NOT get it. I had three light-weight roadbikes on this rack while driving up to school. While I was driving on the freeway, the horizontal bar that holds the bikes actually fell so that it was angled down. If I had not locked the bikes together to the bike rack, they would have slid off and hit the car behind me, which I'm sure would have caused an accident. When it fell, it actually made two big dents on my trunk and one of the bike pedals scratched up my bumper. I was extremely happy with this bike rack until this incident. I am in the process of finding a new, sturdy bike rack (not from Bell).

Great, affordable, EZ

This rack works great, I use it on my Cadillac sedan at highway speeds so I can vouch for it's safety/rigidity . The install was pretty straight forward with the straps being labeled, and each dock that touches the vehicle is wrapped in non-abrasive foam so that you wont scratch your car or truck. Also the holsters for each bike uses heavy duty velcro so that it fits a variety of frame styles. For example my bike is a Mongoose Snare ([...]) with a pretty 'original' skeleton which I managed to secure with a bit of convincing. I'd definitely recommend this to a friend or family member 5stars!!

Sadly Dissapointed

First of all, I will say that my review is kind of unfair because we never got to use it. I bought this rack for a trip, but it wouldn't fit on either of our cars (we both have spoilers). We didn't get to mount our bikes to really test it, but it didn't seem that it was that sturdy. Also, when I went to return it, it was going to be a $13.00 charge for shipping ($17 to ship it to me in the first place). My advice, is buy it from Target.com directly (sorry amazon, I still love you!) so you can return it to the store to avoid the extra shipping charges if it doesn't work out. I'm still looking for a bike rack (I have a hatchback with a spoiler)...anyone know of any good ones?

Rating :

It does the job

This is the first bike rack I own, so I can't compare to others, but the design of the straps is not exactly the best design to secure and adjust to support the weight of 3 adult mountain bikes. It is easy to mount and I like the security lock. I purchased an additional cargo strap to ensure it secures the rack properly to the vehicle and can handle the weight on bumpy roads. It probably won't need that with lighter race bikes or children bikes.

Buy American!

The Swedish makers of this rack actually pack a card in the box saying that they have no liability for damage to your vehicle or bicycles caused by their product. They don't even have a customer service number to contact them. This rack carried bikes just fine but the "anti-sway" bracket rubbed the paint off of my new Fuji. Now I am stuck with this damage even though the rack has been returned. Don't buy anything from Thule. Buy from someone that stands behind their products!

Nice, but I can not wait until that Thule Raceway to come out!

Typical trunk rack, but better quality than average since it is a Thule. There are no setting details for a 2004 Cadillac CTS but it works fine. The manual says trunk is not able to hold the weight but I had no issues with 2 bikes on. You still have the whole strap thing though, so I can not wait until the Thule 9002 Raceway comes out early next year (keeps getting delayed, ugh!).

Great rack

I commute 5 times a day about 40-50 miles roundtrip carrying one bike. After a horrible experience with a "budget" bike rack, I went to the bike store and purchased this one based on their recommendations. It is a great rack! Very sturdy and holds my bike in place. The only con is that I cannot open my trunk when the rack is on (I drive a Kia Rio), but I do not use it much, so it's not that big of a deal. Great purchase.

Rating :

Great bike rack

When I bought this I was very hesitant as I saw older reviews referring to flimsy plastic parts. I think its possible there was a re-design, the model I got was rock solid. I drove it for 1400 miles, including a couple hours of rain, going probably average of 75 miles and it did not fail me. The no-sway attachment that comes with it is the key and it works great. I am using it on a hatchback style car with a road bike.

2" Hitch Wedge, this little wonder does a big job. It does double duty by holding your hitch gear tight & your PIN.

Customer Review :

Works great!

Product works exactly as advertised when used with a SARIS Thelma bike rack. No more swaying when going around corners. Very stable now. Added a lock washer to make sure vibration does not allow the nut to come loose. Made very well with sturdy materials.

broke first try

I thought this would work but your hitch bar will still move up and down.

A single unit does reduce play but I could still easily move the hitch bar up and down which surprised me. I was able to remove it one time. When they say it also acts as an anti theft device, they are correct. Even after I backed off the nut, I could not remove my pin or remove the wedge. You will have to carry something to tap your pin out so it will releave the tension on it. This was my experience with a Valley/Uhaul hitch.

On the second try I figured I would make it tighter to see if it would stop the bar from moving.
I tried to tighten it more and the way this unit cocks on an angle to wedge in. made the nut get stuck at the end threads. I tried to get it off and the eyebolt just sheared off.

I returned for a refund which was granted. If they made the bolt stronger maybe I would rate it a little higher.

Didn't fit at all

We bought this to get rid of some excess play on our camper/bike hitch. In theory, it looks like it works well, but the guarantee it works on 100% of hitches is crap. We have a bumper hitch adapter for the camper and a Swagman bike rack. The "No Rattle Hitch Stabalizer" will not work with this combination. The eye bolt will not reach. I'll keep to see if it works with other hitch combinations when we finish our camping trip.

Boone AKA The Wedge

I ordered 2 of these items for our upcoming trip to FL. One was retuned, and replaced by Amazon, because it broke on installation.

So today, June 25th, I went to re-install on my hitch basket. The first one broke upon tightening to eliminate the hitch rattle. No problem you say because I have a spare. When installing the second one, it also broke.

The part that is supposed to engage the trailer hitch to eliminate the hitch rattling is made of what looks like white metal, very weak and cannot stand the pressure of tightening the bolt.

Now I'm have a problem. Amazon will no longer accept a return, date expired,

Good idea, just poor materials. Look for something better.

Not Satisfied

I wanted to eliminate the bounce in my bike rack and thought that this device would do that for me. Well, I put it on and tightened it down, but my bike rack still moved up & down. So, I tightened it further and the black "metal" bracket snapped in half. It didn't bend (like I assumed metal would), it simply broke in half. I would not recommend this item until it's built with a more resilient material. Actually, I don't think I would recommend it even then because it didn't seem to stop my bike rack from bouncing.

OEM replacement - EXCELLENT!

Down here in lower, slower Florida the sun and salt air conspire to destroy any compound exposed to the elements. My original chain straps, in continuous use and exposed 24/7 to the elements for the past four years, are nearing their useful existence, evidenced by minute cracks when pulled to attach my bikes to my Yakima hitch rack.

These straps are essential to maintaining safe transportation of my beloved two-wheel carbon fiber, titanium and steel babies.

They are OEM replacements and inexpensive. Do yourself a favor, keep a spare set on hand or replace your rack's aging straps today!

yakima bike straps

I recently purchased these Yakima bike straps #2412 for my hitch bike carrier. One size does not fit all models. The holes were way too small to fit over the cradle. I have been unable to find replacement straps from any Yakima dealer in our surrounding area. But after much research, I think I finally found the correct size straps from a place in Texas called Rack Outfitters. The correct size strap is #8820103 and $8.00 for 2. My bike rack is a Big Horn 4 hitch model - 2002.

Work with my bike rack, however they are slightly different then the originals (a bit harder to put on and off). This was the best site I found that carried the straps. I bought my bike rack at Dicks Sporting Goods, but they don't carry the extra straps.

Question : Bycicle rack for a regular sports car?
I own a sports car and i was wondering if a bike rack can fit on my sports car. I see people with bycicle racks but only on their big SUV's or Jeep. I dont want to spend money buying another car just for a bike rack but i do want to take my bike to the beach or mountains so i can have some fun with it. Can a bike rack fit on a compact car? I have a 2000 toyota celica

Answer:
You can put one of those strap-retained bike racks on the back of your trunk.. That would be the simplest way to go....Or, you can buy a trailer hitch (believe it or not those actually exist for Toyota Celicas, like this one: http://performance.drivewire.com/getparts/index.aspx?pref=Trailer%20Hitch|TOYOTA|CELICA|2000||||||To wing%20Accessories ). Get the hitch installed on your car, then put a hitch-mounted bike rack like a Yakima or Thule on it. A class-1 hitch should be good enough to carry 1 bike. I don't know if it is strong enough for 2 or more though (I probably wouldn't chance it).I don't know if they make roof racks that will fit the Celica, but if they did it probably needs some sort of klunky adapter system to hook onto seams or door ledges in the carbody, and a lot more expensive than the other systems.Hope this helps a little.

Question : Why do import tuner cars sometimes sport a bike rack on top of their car?
I think it looks pretty cool, but to be honest I think most import tuner car owners only do it for the looks. What's the real answer behind this question? Is it just straight for looks or what? Also how much do these usually cost? Reason why I'm asking is just to see how much people spend on customizing the exterior or what not. Thanks again!LOL @ Johnny Uppercut's commentEW RUST HOODS ARE GROSS THATS JUST RIDICULOUS

Answer:
I have never seen an import tuner car with a roof rack or carrying a bike, but to be fair i suppose we have to mix our daily car may it be a import or any sporty car with our daily lifestyle if that is the only car we have.Money wise all depends to which scene you are following there are a mass of car scenes out there, tuner wise realtes more to tuner engines so alot of time is spend with the engines due to them being able to produce great power figures, then there are general modders whom add kits and no little engine work then there are sleeper cars etc etc etc we could go on as there are so mnay scenes in so many countries.Myself have a mild bodykit and some engine mods as i would not use a mass of power etc as nowdays i attend more school runs then car meets

Question : looking for a bike rack that'll fit a car with a spoiler.?
Honda Jazz 1.4 sports body kit.to fit either on the back window, preffered, or on the roof. Now if I had only bought the plain 1.4 model it'll be so easy to get!

Question : I'm thinking about commuting. Where can I buy a Specialized Tricross Sport Triple in Irvine, CA?
My last bike was a Huffy when I was pre-teen so you can understand how new I am to riding. There isn't a bike rack on my car, so I'll need to find a place close enough to have it professionally fit and then I can ride it home. Supposedly there are some great bike shops in the area, but I haven't been able to locate one that deals Specialized and close enough for a beginner rider. Any suggestions?

Answer:
I live in Tustin and don't know of any good shops in Irvine. I bought my bike @ Jax Irvine, but they had such poor customer service that I'd never buy from there again. Plus, they are insanely overpriced and take advantage of the uninformed in the repair shop. The Path bike shop in Tustin is one of the best shops around. They are very friendly, although it is a tad intimidating the first time you go in there. In fact, I bet an employee would give you a ride home.Switchback Cyclery in Orange is another great shop. I've bought a couple of accessories there and they have always been willing to help me out.Rock N Road has a good reputation amongst bikers. My buddy loves taking his bike there because they clean it up and make it feel like new again. Here is a link to a forum that has Local Bike Shop (LBS) reviews, mostly Orange County.http://www.socaltrailriders.org/forum/market-place/4727-lbs-reviews.html

Question : Bike rack for Alero.?
My boyfriend and I just bought some mountain bikes; well mine's a hybrid. When we were at the store last night getting his we told the salesperson we needed a bike rack. He looked up my car info., 2000 Olds Alero, and told us that since Aleros have plastic bumper they cannot hold the weight of the rack. Now this was at an actual bike shop, I know if I go to a place like Dick's Sporting Goods I can buy a rack no problem. Has anyone had this experience or put a rack on a car that is not supposed to have one? I appreciate the salesperson's honesty and he told me I could have a hitch welded onto my car and get a rack that way. A roof rack won't work w/my car either appartently (plus they are more expensive than my bike).

Answer:
The bike shop may be correct. The better rack manufacturers test every car for each of there products and produce a fit guide. The salesman at the bike shop probably looked up your car and the fit guide indicated that there was no secure position for the weight bearing portion of the rack. Now these rating are usually a little conservation since they are careful about liability. You could go to a shop with another brand of rack and see if others fit. Check out the online fit selectors for Thule, Yakima, and Rhode Gear. The racks at Dick's are often 'one-size-fits-all.' It may work, but you take more of a risk.

Question : Billy has created a device called a TowRack, which is a rack for carrying sports equipment such as bikes, skis
Billy has created a device called a TowRack, which is a rack for carrying sports equipment such as bikes, skis and kayaks. What makes this item different form other racks is that it attaches to a vehicle's trailer hitch and has a single wheel to help support the weight of the rack and items attached to it. Because it is so much lighter than a regular trailer, it can be used on even the smallest of cars that are not designed to tow regular trailers. Because of the success of this product, competitors introduce similar products. But because of the initial success of Billy's TowRack, all of these similar products are often referred to as TowRacks. Billy has also written a book about using "TowRacks" and safe driving techniques for driving with TowRacks and would like to obtain a copyright for the book. Discuss Billy's legal situation. What actions can he take? Do you think that he will prevail? Why? Please give examples of three other similar cases and the results.

Question : Whats the Best Bike Rack for 2009?
I have a 2009 Impreza Outback Sport and I have been using a bike rack that straps on to the back end. Problem is it holds the bikes too close to the car so if you go over a bump it once caused on of my peddles to scratch the paint of the car... (700 to fix) I know absolutely nothing about racks but does anyone know how you get a hitch on the bottom of the car so its held out a bit? Is that even possible? If so whats the best rack to buy straps and hitch ones?? It has the roof racks but i would rather not have bikes on top even though that would prob be the easiest. Thanks!

Answer:
any u-haul or trailer dealership can install a trailer hitch for you. they also make bike racks that attach to the hitch so you can strap them in behind the lift gate. don't even have to take the wheels off the bikes or reach up to install them. best solution imo.

Question : do walmart sell bicycle racks for cars? and where would it be? in auto or sporting goods?
i didnt see any. are they near the bikes, where they have pumps and bike baskets and stuff?

Answer:
They are in the bicycle section.
