Nice looking fairing

I like the appearance and quality of the fairing but it does not fit on racks that have the rail-type bike holders that extend over the front and rear crossbars. The brackets that attach the fairing to the crossbar are too short for that type of rack. I found I could not use it once I put it together and can't return it because it won't fit back in the box.

Just as described

This yakima roof rack fairing worked just as everyone said it would. I have an acura tsx and the fairing helped reduce the howling noise to a minimum. It was close to intolerable without it on. A must purchase for anyone with a roof rack.

Awesome!!

This product is indeed amazing. The yakima fairing fulfills its purpose of substantially minimizing the loud wind blowing noise when a roof-rack is installed. This product is extremely easy to install (about 10 minutes tops). Besides the it primary purpose, it also gives you vehicle a make-over, gives it a sporty look to it. I would definitely recommend this product!!!

Cons: It can definitely be cheaper for two reasons: 1) flexy material looks that it can go for less. 2) the front of the fairing says "Yakima", its like free advertisement.

noise eliminator

It is very effective as a noise eliminator but rather expensive for a strip of plastic. The mounting clamps can interfere with the mounting clamps of the other devices for bike mounts, etc. I would consider fabricating one myself for the price.

The fairing has made a difference. Without the Fairing the howling from the rack was loud enough to interupt conversations. Simple to install and clear instructions.

Simple and Effective

When I first purchased my Yakima system, I considered getting either a faring or the WindJammer, but decided against it thinking to myself "How bad can the noise be?" Well, around 35-45 mph, the humming noise coming from the bars was very loud. (Almost as loud as a typical vacuum cleaner.) Above and below the 35-45 range, the noise wasn't as bad, but still very noticeable.

After reading other reviews, I decided to give the WindJammer a try. Honestly, the windjammer looked as unimpressive to me in person as it did in pictures online, simply a tear-drop shaped piece of plastic and I found myself skeptical that it would really work. Installation was a breeze, simply unsnap the edge of the WindJammer, slip it over the bar, and snap the end back in place.

After going out for my first drive, I was a believer in the product. I was amazed at how much of the humming noise this cut out. At high speeds (65+ mph) the wind noise becomes pretty apparent and starts to get a little bothersome, but it is better now then before the WindJammer.

Another very slight issue that I had was that when going through a car wash, the spray hit the WindJammer and spun it down, hitting the roof of my car. No damage was caused to my roof and I simply had to rotate it back into place by hand to correct the problem. Honestly, it surprised me a bit the first time I was washing my car and hit the then mysterious "thunk", but now I don't worry about it at all.

This is a great product that works well. I didn't want something as large as a faring on the front of my roof and this was a good solution to my problem.

Does the job...don't notice any noise any more!

I just bought a Yakima rack off Craigslist for my 2005 Subaru WRX Wagon. My car does not have a moon-roof, which I've heard can make the noise a big more noticeable (makes sense), but despite this I was noticing that awful vibrational wind sound around 35mph. I read a number of reviews and was concerned about gas mileage impact of getting one of the fairings so figured I would try this $20 option first.

Amazingly simple and effective. Since I've put this on I haven't noticed the rack once and I've been on the highway a few times around 70mph. Great product! I haven't noticed much impact on gas mileage yet, but it will take some time to evaluate this because of the nature of highway/city mix, etc. First full tank of gas with this thing was right around normal though, so it definitely doesn't have the sort of impact I've heard the fairing can have (~20% or up to 5mpg in my case).

Such a difference!

I tried this before the fairing, because it's cheaper, smaller and simpler. We had a really disturbing noise before, and the noise is practically gone with the windjammer. From others reports though, it seems like success varies from vehicle to vehicle. One concern was that it's easy to steal (ziplock style closure). I superglued mine shut, and slide it off the bar if I need to remove it (which I never do). Definitely worth a try!

Questioning the Yakima WindJammer vs. the Fairing? The WindJammer also helps cut wind noise...with a little tweaking

I had the Yakima fairing mounted on my roof rack for ten years, and while it eliminated wind noise over my Yakima bike rack, the fairing actually decreased the fuel mileage of my car by almost 20%!

Tired of paying extra at the pump, I removed the fairing, but quickly got annoyed of wind noise over the Yakima's round roof bars above 55mph. I found the WindJammer, tried it, and it works. My fuel economy is back to normal and wind noise is reduced (but not as much as the fairing).

Also, it seemed my round Yakima roof bars were actually too thin for the WindJammer (it clamped closed, but could spin around the bar freely). So, I added a small strip of 1/8" thick adhesive foam to the inside of the WindJammer to keep it snug.

The WindJammer is a little pricey for what it is (a piece of plastic), but in my view, it's a much better option than the fairing.

great looking fairing

I have bought two of these one for my vehicle and one for the basket rack that goes on top of my Jeep. Easy to install and a quality product.

No more whistling!

I read reviews of people who loved or hated this rack... so I figured I would go for it. It was easy to install, once you got all the pieces together. I repeat, once you got all the pieces put together; there are a couple gaskets that I thought I was going to break when trying to set it up.
Once I did though, it went on my racks very easily and it stopped all whistling my racks used to make on the highway!
I think it looks pretty cool too.

Go for it!

It should be standard equipment when you buy roof racks. Before I wasn't able to drive over 55mph because of noise from racks. Now noise is GONE!!!! Completely gone - sometimes with strong side wind I hear some little whistling, but I can deal with that. You need this toy!

Find the 555 on ebay!

I had the old style (Model 555) on my car, and thought this one looked so much cooler and just had to have it. So, I put the 555 on ebay and watched it get bid up to more money than it costs for the 872! I thought to myself "Sweet! Made enough to buy the new one! Suckers!"

I soon found out why. I could never get the 872 to fit properly on my car (2003 Toyota Matrix) and it would constantly vibrate on the highway, which caused more wind noise and defeated the purpose of the fairing (not to mention scratching up my roof where the feet made contact). The 872 doesn't have nearly the adjustability that the 555 had making it a pain in the you-know-what to get it on there right. I got so fed up that I gave it to my brother to see if he could get it to work on his Impreza wagon and he had the same issue.

Bottom line - see if you can find one of the old-style ones on ebay! They were great! I gave this 2 stars based solely on the looks compared to the old style. For me though - function is much more important than fashion.

Keep the roof bars quiet.

I have no complaint about the fairing. Easy clip and bolt on. Light in weight but never rattle on the highway. I do get 1-2 mpg of mileage penalty for my V6 with the fairing and two crossbars on. However with minimal wind noise and low profile style, I decide to kepp them on all the time.

Looks great... vibrates at high speeds when cold

Works and looks great on my HHR.. only issue is when it's cold (below freezing) it vibrates at speeds over 40mph.. just turn the music up louder... that helps with the wife and kids also...

Cuts down wind noise

This was a little tricky to install, but it does a great job cutting down the wind noise. I was surprised at how much noise the load bars created after I installed them. The fairing reduces the wind noise almost to the point it was before the load bars were on the car.

Definitely worth the investment, and a little installation hassle.

Nice product but did not work for my application.

This Fairing was to be installed on my 2005 BMW X3. This did not work for my application due to the fact the fairing would have interfered with the sunroof. I'm sure X3's without the sunroof option would work well with the fairing. Other than that, it's a well designed, durable product.

Does not fit all roof racks

Purchased this for a 2007 Volvo XC70 that has the Volvo-branded wing profile cross bars. Even though Thule makes both the cross bars and the fairing, they don't work together. I called Thule for an adaptor and they confirmed that they don't work together. The kit has adaptors for the standard square cross bars and Thule's rounded cross bars.

INCREDIBLY EFFECTIVE!!!

It not only gives a gorgeous look to my car but also eliminates 100% the noise made by the wind when goes thru my rack.

It is important to clarify that I DON'T use a Thule rack (mine is a custom made). So I don't know if Thule racks produce or not any noise against the wind; mine did, and it was uncomfortably loud!

Once I installed my Thule Roof Rack Fairing the silence was absolute! I couldn't believe it was so effective!

Other thing which is pretty important: as my rack is custom made the Thule adaptors did not fit on my rack bars; but I solved this easily by tying up the Thule arms to my rack with adjustable plastic belts (see pictures on top). I used black belts so it is not noticeable.

And it works great! I have tested it in 2 8-hour round trips now at a speed of 170 km/h (about 105 mph) and this thing stays in place all the time.

A very simple but effective solution! And I spent just some bucks on it!

Buy this product with confidence! It's fantastic!
