Just right

I am completely satisfied with this bottom bracket. Inexpensive, decent quality, and Shimano reliability. Make sure you have the special tool to install it!

Excellent, sport-tough bottom bracket for my Mongoose

The Shimano bottom bracket is excellent. I needed to replace my old one because the thread holding the pedal arm on had become stripped. That happened when my son's 320-pound buddy rode my Mongoose sx 6.7 mountain bike. Somehow.

The item arrived in about three days. The directions were unambiguous. I only needed to borrow a special tool from a buddy, and the job was completed and cleaned up in less than 30 minutes.

The big boy has ridden again a number of times in the past two months; no sign of wear at all. I ride it myself on weekends. This seems to be one of those mythical "bullet-proof" mechanical Shimano items we've heard about! Great price ($26!!), easy installation, high quality. Perfect.

Shimano UN26 - smooth action, plastic part

I bought this bottom bracket as a replacement for original equipment on a Diamondback mountain bike. I noticed that despite my effort to match the dimensions, the bottom bracket wouldn't thread fully into the bike but I don't fault the product for that and in any case functionally it works just fine.

The action of the bottom bracket is very smooth. The plastic cup included with the product got a bit beat up as I tried to install it, so I ended up keeping the original metal cup from the original equipment bottom bracket. I would have preferred a metal cup.

Overall, based on the Shimano brand and reasonable price, I would purchase the item again and so far it is performing well.

only one nut included

Product was what was expected, and shipment was fast.
There was only one nut included though - not sure why, I've got two pedals and two legs.
It either should be two nuts or no nuts at all.
The description doesn't say that no nuts provided though, does it?
So I had to go to LBS and buy the nuts, could as well buy the BB there as well and not bother with Amazon and Niagara Works.

Questions & Answers
Question : Are cup and cone bearings still common in wheel hubs and bottom brackets?
I ask out of curiousity - all my bicycles are vintage and so I never work with cartridge bearings. I was just wondering if good old fashioned cups and cones are gone yet.

Answer:
Cup and cone bearings are still common in hubs. Shimano and Campagnolo, in particular, still use loose ball bearings in almost their entire hub range, and they work great.Loose ball BBs are now almost exclusively for track bikes, with the exception of very cheap and nasty BBs and low-mid range BMXs, all (road/mtb) others are cartridge bearing.Ball bearings will probably always be available, but to the poster who can't find axles in 130/136mm, I have a hacksaw and file you might like to meet.

Question : my bottom brackets on my braces keep coming loose?
I had 2 broken brakets on the left bottom side of my mouth & than the last one on the bottom right side of my mouth & ever since the bottom right one has broke the ones next to it broke than the one next to that & the one next to that . do you know why ? am i the only one that this has happened to ? i go to the ortho in 6 days & im scared that they'll get mad ? what should i do ?

Answer:
Either the glue they used to put on the brackets was incorrectly made or your teeth has moved so much they couldn't stay on. I'm presuming that you didn't end up in a situation where extra pressure or something affected the brackets. It's probably not your fault.I suggest you call them and inform them of it. You need to have the brackets put back on and that takes slightly more time than the appointment you were probably going to have.

Question : What is the name of the brackets on the bottom of a ZXR 400?
On the bottom of my ZXR 400 L9 there are two brackets that lock the bottom two fairings together (like a thin strip of aluminium/metal with two holes in it where screws go into the left and right fairing. Mine have frayed and need to get new ones to stop excess stress on the bike.

Answer:
Al,,Kawasaki refers to those lower cowling brackets as"BRACKET,LOWER COWLING"LOL,,,a creative bunch ,aren't they?? :)There's an individual part number for each,,Left and Right side. They seem to be priced at approx $10 US dollars each..................I cannot see ZXR 400 model specifically here in the States. But all the similar US Models use similar parts. If you cannot happen to locate any original spares from a Kawasaki Dealership.... (that sort of Item is usually "Dealer Only"--no aftermarket parts)........it looks like it would be easy enough to fabricate something workable with common tools & materials.Good Luck with it.

Question : i just got braces on saturday, and both of my top molars are hitting my bottom brackets,is this normal?
i cant even bite down all the way ive been eating chicken broth and liquids since sat.i dont even have the wires on my braces yet, just brackets i have to wait 2 weeks, should i call the ortho about this problem??

Answer:
its going to feel funny. all the metals going to be bothersome till after a couple of days. then you'll feel better and be able to eat normally again.

Question : how many different size bottom brackets are there?
the bottom brackets that are connected to the cranksets im guessing that thats what there called because i do not know. And what are the steps to remove a bottom bracket nd how can you find the size

Answer:
It will depend on the bottom bracket you have. The size will be printed on the cartridge or stamped on the spindle.http://bicycletutor.com/part/bottom-bracket/

Question : What kinds of bottom brackets are there?Road?
I want to know what kind of bottom brackets are there1.With cups/whole capsuled bearings 2.English treaded and what are there? How do you determine that?

Answer:
To add to above:Italian and English thread (most all is Eng. as already stated 68 or 73 shell size)Spindle end fittings as stated above. Spindle length - depends on the crank used and whether 2 or 3 ring.Bearings: loose/caged ball and cup, roller bearing (older DA), sealed cartridge and exo type (bearings outboard of shell)For example my bike uses a DA 7500 series (roller bearings), octilink, English (68mm) thread, 109 spindle length.

Question : Why do some bike manufacturers use eccentric bottom brackets on their bikes instead of sliding dropouts?
It seems like sliding dropouts would better to use because they're a bit lighter and they look easier to adjust.

Answer:
Well, eccentrics are used on bikes that require precise chain tension adjustment such as the timing chain of tandem bicycles, the chain that connects the back and front cranks. They may also be used on bikes that do not have an adjustable rear wheel position, because of vertical dropouts or a rear disc brake, and that do not have an external rear derailleur such as single-speeds or bikes with an internal-geared hub. If the bike you are speaking of does not fit into one of these categories, chances are its just a manufactures decision for one reason or another. In most cases sliding dropouts are a better choice and are much easier to adjust.

Question : Are all bottom brackets on bmx bikes universal?
i broke my crank arms and i have a different bike with bad berings in the crank. could i take the bottom bracket off that bike and then just put the other berings on that crank?

Answer:
Every bike has a set. or fixed, bottom bracket type. It will be any one of these... - U.S. - Mid - Spanish - EuroChechk your bike specifications and owners manual to decipher which one it is.

Question : why are spacers needed in bottom brackets?
i was rushing to put mine togetehr and forgot about the spacer. but then i relized that the frame has little ridges that prevent the bearings form going in more than needed so i thought it would be fine. should i put it in?

Answer:
it should be fine as long as the bike doesn't take a lot of abuse around the crank area. The spacer is there so if to much force is put on the bearings, the don't collapse into the frame. Also not all frames have the ridges for stopping the bearings because bearings can be different widths.

Question : What's the difference between ball bearing and hollowgram bottom brackets?
What's the difference and which is better?

Answer:
It's Hollowtech (not hollowgram)It is Shimano's name for the hollow forged cranks used with Octalink splined bottom brackets. These lightweight cranks are made by welding two forged aluminum channels together.Hollowtech II The two-piece crank /bottom bracket system introduced with the 2004 10-speed Dura-Ace line. These use external bearings that hang outboard from the bottom bracket shell.Ball bearing is old-skool. Some other makers use a sealed bearing, rather than ball bearing or Hollowtech.
