Editorial Review :

The 21" expandable baton with rubber grip is a blast of fury to an aggressor. The wielder of the baton is the one in control, one whack with this blast bat will send a would be attacker limping off with no intentions of coming back.

Customer Review :

Takes a licking and keeps on ticking

When I got it I had to really fling it to get it to open up, and when it finally did I could not get it to retracted. I emailed the vendor and he suggested hitting the tip with a hammer and spraying it with WD40. I used graphite gun lubricant instead. The thing is sweet now. Compared to others I have owned this one now has the smoothest action, and it doesn't go lose. I guess they are really tight when they are new and need to be worked in.

psychology of threat

The mere sight and sound of an expandable baton is enough to discourage most unarmed or lightly armed threats. The baton has greater reach than a knife and is stronger than a bare fist and upon seeing the baton, an attacker will definitely think twice before landing an assault depending on the build and confidence of the person holding the baton. A small 90 pound person with a metal stick is not very intimidating, and a more effective defensive weapon such as pepper spray or a hand gun might be a better option for those people. The baton as an effective defensive weapon is situationally dependent as well as dependent on the competence of the person holding it and as such, I would not recommend it to most people, pepper spray and handguns being widely available and highly effective.

The effectiveness of this baton as an incredibly intimidating visual and auditory deterrent alone, regardless of if the wielder understands how to properly use it or not, determined the 5 star rating that I gave it. In this regard, the baton functions immediately, magnificently, and flawlessly.

Without destructive testing (or actual defensive use) it is impossible for me to test durability and construction without speculating. But, as I've said earlier, the baton under normal circumstances merely serves as a deterrent to attack and not really as a functioning weapon, which, under actual attack, pepper spray or a handgun would be FAR more effective, therefore, build quality is of little importance. However, under visual inspection of the build quality and pure speculation, I feel that if I were to actually need to use it, the baton would not fail catastrophically, although, I would not trust it to be fully usable afterward. I have no doubt that the steel will bend under those circumstances assuming that it's manufactured with cheap mild steel and left unhardened (questimated steel hardness by comparative scratch test with known samples) in order to lessen manufacturing cost. Name brand ASP and Monodnock expandable batons, though manufactured from high quality hardened steel, likewise, will not last brutal treatment, so, essentially, I am merely speculating that the build quality of the $23 SecPro baton does not exceed that of one that costs over $70.

As an intimidating tool for self defense, I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this product, but, as an actual weapon, I would NOT recommend ANY baton, neither ASP nor Monodnock nor any of the off brand ones. I question it's actual usefulness as a weapon preferring pepper spray or firearms in actual use.

A lot of people consider these for dog defense, but likewise, pepper spray or a handgun or even a walking stick would be far more effective, but, in practice I find this to be going a little bit overboard. I can see the usefulness of a baton for dog defense for postal workers or door to door salesmen because of its low pocketable profile, its concealability when retracted, and ease of carrying it around on person in a vehicle (like law enforcement officers). For the average person walking their dog around the woods or in a neighborhood, taking a class on avoiding dog bites would be far more effective and I personally just carry a can of pepper spray and a walking stick.

Rating :

I returned it, but still a decent knife.

I personally returned the knife - though from the short time I had it, it seemed like a well built knife. Just for my needs, and style of knife wielding it wouldn't have been enjoyable for me to own.

Pros:
Real nice pearl gray handle finish.
Sturdy, built in belt/pocket clip.
Belt clip is built. So it hands "upside" down.
Nice sharp/thin blade

Cons:
Gray metal portion of handle is dull compared to pearl gray lower portion.
The "button" that opens the knife should be a bit larger. It doesn't standout well enough to make the opening of the knife smooth. So its a bit time consuming.
The button to release the blade back into place is also small and sluggish. Which makes it a bit of a dangerous knife - If trying to open and close it in a quick gesture.

These are the reasons why I returned the knife, but M-Tech is also the company that I'm ordering my next knife from. Because though I disliked this knife. The workmanship of the knife isn't flawed. Just the mechanics for me, didn't work well.

Rating :

Great knife for the price.

I bought this knife, not expecting it to be of very good quality because of it's price tag, and I was pleasantly surprised. The knife looks great, and with a little sharpening it really works. The only bad thing about it is that sometimes it is hard to open, and the black steel on the knife isn't of very good quality. But overall, a must buy for the price.

Great Blade

This is a great knife, I carry it with me all the time. Sharp straight out of the box, and its great looking. Very sturdy. Great buy!

Good Quality Hand Wraps - Recommended

This set contains three sets of 108" Everlast Hand Wraps in Red, Black, and White colors. I was concerned about the shorter length of these since I have large to X-large hands and need to have good wrapping to support my wrists. These were just the right the size, covering my wrists and knuckles with several layers. While others have noted that the 180" length wraps provide better protection, I find that is too much material to have under my light gloves for heavy bag work and light contact sparing.

The material is good quality and doesn't tend to bunch up on itself while wrapping. The built in "Thumb Loops" are very handy and does allow these wraps to be put on by yourself, which is a big plus, and the Velcro fastener is fairly long, providing a secure hold throughout a long workout.

Recommended, with the above length caveat.

Rating :

perfect for mma

Great product. Small enough to fit into mma gloves and less material in your palm than the 180 inch wraps. This is naturally better for grappling. Obviously not meant for heavy bag use unless you also use your mma gloves too.

Rating :

Great wraps

Easy 2 use, has a slot at 1 end, so you can put some fingers through. Long lasting

Rating :

Watch Out!

These handwraps are very short. 108" is not the ideal length and I was very unhappy to find this out. I would suggest a much longer handwrap. Especially if you're a beginner, like myself, you need much longer handwraps for the support because longer handwraps allow you to have cross-finger support as well as the much needed wrist support. DON'T BUY. GET LONGER HANDWRAPS!!

Rating :

Great item

These wraps are very durable. The velcro on them started falling off after using them for a while but other than that they feel and look great. I even wore them to school! They were a little short but not that big of a problem if you are just messing around with your friends. Like i said, great product. Thanks for your time.

Very heavy, sturdy and a great deal. My girlfriend broke the first pair of cuffs I bought, but she can't do anything to these. I love the black finish, amazing cuffs.

Awesome...sturdy.....

Honesty, I bought these for kinnky reasons....They are so sturdy, intimidating, discreet and actually quite comfortable for legit hand cuffs. They are on the heavy side, but for normal use that would probably be a benefit.

Fantastic cuffs! They feel like they will last forever!

this shoe has one of the best fits i have ever felt, like a sock. the grip is good but will wear away fast if you are climbing up walls.

Great ninja shoes!

I got these shoes with the intention of using them for free running. But after wearing them, I find them great for everyday wear as well as for free running. They have a thin sole that can take some getting used to, but that forces good form. It took a while for the intense rubber smell to wear away, but at this price you can't beat them. If walking on pavement a lot, they may wear quickly, but they seem to hold up quite well. No rips, tears, or separations. They are as tough some much more expensive shoes I've had.

Rating :

Sneaky Sneakers

I love these shoes! They're soft and comfy and I wear them EVERYWHERE. I got them to do Tai Chi but found myself wearing them all around. They're snug to my feet but flexible and the sole are extra grippy.

Questions & Answers
Question : Any suggestions for my exercise regime? (for martial arts mainly)?
Ok i've started martial arts, and i'm lagging in the fitness area so thats kinda killing me right now. To remedy this i'm going to start going to the gym more often, 10 mins bike20 push ups, 20 sit ups,10 mins strider20 push ups, 20 sit ups,10 mins low seated bike20 push ups, 20 sit ups,10 mins rower20 push ups, 20 sit ups10 mins low seated bike20 push ups, 20 sit ups,10 mins jogger20 push ups 20 sit ups10 mins on the normal bike again.totals in at 120 push ups and sit ups spread about, and a lot of cardio work which should also help build up my legs.Basic reasons for this plan1: I need the fitness i'm lagging a LOT in stamina right now, 2: Sit ups are to help build my trunk area always good for martial arts, push ups will help with my punching power to a degree, ALSO gives a short rest period for my legs between exercise without letting my heart rate drop too muchdoes anyone have any suggestions of other exercises i can do at the gym? This is mostly to the first comment, i've already tried this onceThe first 10 minutes isn't enough to build up my heart rate, Thats just a time period for me to do my warmup, There's normally about 10 mins of strtching afterwards. (martial arts hence why flexability is useful) Where i'm so unfit my heartrate doesnt drop all that quickly, so the push ups, / situps keep my heartrate at its current stage normally only dropping maybe 5bpm. After that the next 10 mins cardio boosts my heart rate up to the cardio level, and then once more the sit ups / push ups keep that heart rate. The gym i'm going to is full of idiots as i call them, all a bunch of muscle heads, they do no warm up, no stretching no cardio just straight on weights, its VERY rare for the cardio machines to be held up. (there's about 3 of each machine, and if one is occupied totally i'll just pop another cardio in its place for that time)a few more random things1: aimed at the 2nd comment mostly, How often would you suggest altering the work out regime? Right now i do kickboxing on a tuesday and i'm taking up king fu on a thursday most likely. So my work out days are generally the monday friday and wednesday (i keep my weekend clear)2: The main reason i'm putting all this extra effort in is because, when i was younger i used to do martial arts, some karate and some thai boxing. Now i'm older and theoretically stronger, but my kicks are so damned weak. I used to have a killer roundhouse, (quite literally as far as a 13 year old making the heavy bag swing almost off its chain) But now i'm hardly even making a thud, and wearing out from kicks fast. now i'm 20 btw, its just so annoying being older and seemingly weaker then when i was a kid :PAlso if muscle groups do adapt would this perhaps work better?Alternating the routine fortnightly. First 2 weeks of the month sticking to the majority cardio work out, and then the 2nd to weeks move to a more free weight upper body work out, (keeping the cardio warm up, warm down, and mid session on the rower)I do try to keep my protein up... but those protein shakes taste like ass

Answer:
I think your plan is a really good one! Interval training is one of the best exercise plans available. That being said, cardio consists of "aerobic" and "anaerobic" training. Aerobic means that your body has enough oxygen to do the required workload. Anaerobic means your body is going through temporary oxygen depletions because your heart isnt strong enough to deliver the oxygen to your muscles fast enough. High altitude training is an example of intentional anaerobic training by athletes that are already in great conditions. Intervals, as you describe, incorporate both aerobic and anaerobic training during the same routine. Usually, you would build up a solid base of aerobic conditioning before you tried something like your routine. But if you are young, I'd say go for it. Your body will adapt. If you are badly out of shape, or over 25, or have some medical issues, I would start off a little slower. Don't get discouraged if you are unable to complete the routine the first time! Cut it in half and build up!Good luck!James

Question : What style of Martial Arts / MMA would be best for me?
I am a 25 yr old female, slim build, average height. I do not do any exercise at present although I have done in the past and enjoyed it. I am interested in taking up a martial art preferably jiu jitsu, brazilian jiu jitsu or muay thai. I am wary of joining a specialist gym at the minute as my fitness isnt great and im worried I will embarass myself. Do mens mma gyms generally accept female members? How fit should I be before I join?Any feedback appreciated! Thank you! Thanks for the answers! Im really interested in brazillan jiu jitsu, how long would it take and how many hours training per week would I have to put in to become good at this? Also does the rarity of this sport amongst women mean that I would be sparring with men? Would this be effective for me? I have no martial arts training whatsoever.

Answer:
your age, build and all the other stats dont matter.you dont have to fit. you will get in shape as you train.there is no best style. what matters is how good your training are, how you train and that you enjoy what you are taking.edit:> bjj is good for what it was intended for one on one sparring. multiple opponents its not so good with . in reality you are better off sparing with men. if you need this in a really situation it will be against a man not a women. i would recommend some practice with men.

Question : I train really quite hard every day in martial arts, yoga, horse riding and jogging. i want to lose 5kg.?
I have a very active lifestyle most days 6 out of 7. I am training in Martial arts and train in hard kicking, sequences, fitness for 90 minutes most nights. I also proctise advanced yoga most days for around 60minutes. In addition I horse ride 5 days a week for 30-40minutes an dtry to jogg at a medium pace every morning for 30minutes.So, my life is very active.I'm 5 foot 4 and weight around 59-60kg.I've always been a little overweight and I would say I have issues with food and body image and have had for a long time.My problem is food and not knowing what and how much I should eat. We are given all our meals here where I live and train. All the food is asian style vegan and very healthy.I want to lose 5kg so I have less body fat so im able to do more of the gymnastic training here and also so that(I wont lie) I will look good.Ive tried very low calorie diets but it's too painful with all the exercise. How much shoul I eat to lose this weight and fat? Please help.

Answer:
your weight just now for your height is good i wouldnt go down to 55kg thats a bit unhealthy for someone of your height.you will probably find that with all the training you are doing you may become heavier because muscle weighs more than fat. if you wish to become more toned then i suggest the exercise you do is gentle rather than straining and pushing yourself to lose weight that it doesnt sound like you can afford to lose.

Question : Which martial art to study?
Hi! I'm a female university student and am interested in taking martial arts for fitness, discipline and personal enjoyment. So far the three I am looking at are Tai Chi, Shaolin, and Savate Kickboxing 1 because they are the only ones that fit my schedule. I am about 5'10" and my normal exercise consists mostly of walking for about 1 and 1/2 to 2 hours everyday (I take public transportation and walk to school and everywhere I need to go). I enjoyed Tae Bo workouts from high school gym class, but other than that, I've never taken a martial art before. Naturally, the idea of being able to defend myself as a single female in an urban setting is appealing. I'm also taking an East Asian Religions class (including Taoism and Buddhism) and wondering if taking a martial art will help me understand these religions and disclipines more thoroughly.Mainly, I want to increase my physical fitness. Which martial art do you think I should take?

Answer:
for a girl if you want to gefend yourself in an urban setting i reccomend krav maga. my sister did krav maga and she said it was awesome. it teaches how to defend against men.but the best martial arts to me are.1 muay thai2 jiu jitsu3 judo

Question : Suggestions for cross training in kung fu/martial arts?
I started kung fu (northern mantis) in July and LOVE it. About two months ago, I started sparring and find myself getting very exhausted very quickly. I have been a runner for years and continue to keep up with it, but from feeling exhausted after even a minute of sparring, I see that my fitness is lacking. What sorts of exercise/activities do you recommend for increasing endurance/reducing how quickly a person becomes tired during sparring? Or what sorts of exercise is complimentary to martial arts in general? (weight lifting, push ups, etc.)

Answer:
Sparring is a different sort of conditioning than running. Running is more aerobic while sparring is more anaerobic. I'd recommend looking into plyometric exercises, which includes a lot of jumping. Mix it in with body-weight exercises such as push-ups, sit-ups, unweighted squats, and so forth. Or, while you're running, add some sprints in. That will also help. You might also take up skipping rope. Part of your exhaustion from sparring is also likely because you're tensing up. Although I haven't seen you spar, I notice it happens a lot in beginners. If you tense up, you burn oxygen uselessly. Try to stay relaxed and see it as a game.

Question : What martial arts style is the most athletic?
I was thinking of going back to martial arts, and was wondering what martial art for requires the most physical fitness, and in turn will give me an intense, dynamic workout. It being a practical self-defense style is key, however exercise is my first priority.

Answer:
muay thai, boxing and most karate styles.

Question : Martial arts?
I trained for 5 years in Shotokan/Goku Ryu Karate. After the five years, my club closed down. About 6 months later i started Hapkido and did that for 6 months but it really wasn't for me. Now i've been completely out of training for 18months. Its been hard coz i've gone from a national champion to nothing. And I've gotten really out of shape, put weight on and let me fitness go completely. Any suggested exercise diet plans to get back into shape for martial arts? Thanks.

Answer:
Well I can tell you first off a few things from experience and one is that weight is harder to keep off as you get older. Secondly, sometimes people lose their competitive desire and so they quit or retire earlier than otherwise. For you it is partly because of your club closing so the fact that you are now starting to want to go back should in itself tell you that you have not lost your desire completely.I would start off gradually and not throw anything faster or harder than half to three fourths speed and power for the first two weeks. That way you will avoid potential injuries to start with. Secondly, I would challenge myself to get back into shape and be better than I was before and to build myself into shape. It did not take just a month to get out of shape and put that weight on and I suspect that it will take more than a month to get back into shape and get the weight off. Third, I would do some cross-training picking something non-martial arts related like swimming, biking, rollerblading to do occasionally and substitute occasionally for part of my work outs. As for diet plans there is certainly enough information out there but if you are interested in competing again try to pick one that builds and adds muscle some as opposed to just losing weight. A modified Atkins diet for instance would be my recommendation since it has so much protein. I competed for many years and learning how to deal with some of the ups and downs that come with that or some of the outside factors that can affect that are something in itself that competitors have to learn how to deal with. Good luck.

Question : Does anyone know what age is appropriate or optimal to get my son started in martial arts?
He's about 3 months old now so I think I'll spare him but I'm curious to know how old he has to be to begin and also, what are the best options for a youngster to get started in.I'm curious because I have no martial arts experience myself save for a few basic karate lessons almost 20 years ago and I would like to get into. I think it would eventually be a fun father/son activity and also a good way to teach him about fitness/exercise and discipline before video games get a hold of him.It might sound ridiculous to be asking so early but I would like to get some basic instruction myself first so at least I can guide him along and discuss it with him and it would help me better evaluate whatever training he eventually gets.Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks in advance,DTThanks for the answers so far.Obviously, I would not force him into this and if he obviously doesn't enjoy it, we can find someother options. Can't speak for him but I would not be adverse to getting him into a full contact sparring situation.CT1209: I'm the dad ;)

Answer:
If you want your kid to have good general fitness, discipline, sociability, flexibility, but not too interested in the self defence aspect you can pretty much choose anything from kungfu, karate, tae kwondo, capoeira, hapkido, aikido etc. etc. Basically 99% of the martial arts out there, the same as 99% of the posters here do.They are all the same-family type atmospheres. No one learns much about fighting. the sensie exchanges belts for your money-everyone feels good its a good deal. The easiest way to choose is just see what your kid likes the look of when he is at the right age.If you would like a more self defence based style you choose jujitsu, brazilian jujitsu, judo, mauy thai, boxing, kickboxing, MMA, or folkstyle or olympic style wrestling. All safe for kids too, same discipline, respect, health benefits etc, except they encourage full contact sparring when the time is right, which is the one thing needed for real application. For kids my favourite is Judo. The reason is its totally safe grappling, no punches or kicks, very realistic, and kids really have a lot of fun doing it since they get to tumble around, play wrestling and chasing games with each other and let off loose energy. A lot of the non working styles(first mentioned) they just stand around throwing punches at thin air for hours- very young kids get bored with that stuff in my experience

Question : learning a martial art?
would I need to be at the peak of psychical fitness to start learning martial arts?Because at the moment I'm not that fit, as I smoke and rarely exercise

Answer:
No you will get in better shape from your studies. The martial arts were designed for the average person not those that were already in good shape. When I began my training in 1967, I was a skinny out of shape kid. Now, at 56 years old, I and can still run rings around guys much younger than I am....

Question : Where can I sell my Fitness First membership? What forum would you recommend to sell this?
I have a membership at Fitness First Philippines (Passport). But I cannot make time to go to the gym. And besides, exercising is not what I'm really after. I like something that will teach me and learn the martial arts. Thank you.

Answer:
ebay??
