Editorial Review :

GoPro's HD Motorsports HERO is the world's highest performance 1080p HD on-board video and still photo camera. Professional quality 1080p, 960p and 720p HD resolutions record at 30 frames per second (60 fps in 720p). The HD Motorsports HERO easily mounts to any helmet, motorcycle, ATV, car, plane, jet ski, boat, snowmobile or other vehicle. The camera's quick-release mounting design makes it easy to re-position the camera around your vehicle for professional quality HD video from several angles. Record up to 2.5 hours on a single charge and up to 9 hours total on a 32GB SD card (not included). Included are mounts for two helmets and three vehicles, as well as a suction cup for maximum versatility and convenience. The housing is waterproof to 180' / 60m. GoPro's obsession with sound has conquered the wind. At 85 mph on a motorcycle, you'll enjoy the throaty sound of your motor, not the wind. Inside even the quietest street cars, hear the pull of your motor...not the drone of the wind and road. Included is a 1100mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery that lasts for up to 2.5 hours of constant recording. With optional accessories, you can also plug the camera into a wall outlet, cigarette lighter, or with any USB-compatible power adapter, wire it directly to your vehicle's electrical system. The battery will charge while you record. The camera can also shoot automatic 5MP photos at 2/5/10/30 and 60 second intervals during your drive or ride, hands free. Pre

Customer Review :

Great, but not perfect.

Just got the camera last week and have managed to play with it in the pool. Once you get it set, its pretty darn simple to use. I'm very pleased with the video quality in the air. In water, the focusing seems a little soft. This is the sort of camera you turn on and leave on, so the ability to edit video is very important. The pluses of this system are the mounts are very good, the video captured in daylight has been very good, and the ability to get replacement lens, housings, and additional mounts is also great. Also, the system is cheap enough that you can take some risks with the camera and get some really fresh shots.

The largest minus this camera has is its lack of documentation. You would think a company that markets video equipment would have some videos on how to use their product, but they do not. No videos and the instructions are written on a massive sheet of paper that would be difficult to use in a breeze. Fortunately some users have created "how to" videos and you can see their stuff on Youtube.

This is my first couple of days video, I'll post an update in a while.

I really want to love this camera.

This is close to being a perfect example of a wearable/mountable POV camera. But unfortunately, close isn't quite good enough.

The pros:
Video is awesome, in all of the modes.
Stills are very good quality, the timelapse feature is fantastic.
It's waterproof.
The mounting options are (almost) limitless.

The cons:
It's awkward to set up. Menu is like something from 20 years ago.
Firmware issues have yet to be addressed by the manufacturer. This is inexcusable as the camera has been available for sale for nearly a year.
Audio is useless. They could have saved weight and cost by just not including a mic. The only instance where it even sort of works is when mounted right near a loudish sound you want to highlight, such as an engine.
There are too many instances where "Macgyvering" is required to get the desired result. The quick release mount rattles so you need to tape the base plate, the non waterproof back allows too much wind noise, so you need to tape over the openings, the shutter button rattles, so you need to tape over that. Moral of the story: BUY TAPE.
The support by the manufacturer is not quite adequate. I realize it's a small start up company, but for all the issues with the use of the camera and the handling/editing of the files, they really need to release some conclusive videos or articles to address these concerns.

People who might find this camera useful:
Auto racing enthusiasts
Mountain Bikers
Sailors
Hobbyist videographers looking for those unique shots

People who will likely be disappointed and frustrated by this camera:
Pretty much anyone who thinks they'll be using it as a camcorder.
People who aren't really tech savvy and/or have an older computer
People who don't like to tinker and engineer solutions to make it do what they want.

Real HD in a small and light package

This little wonder works as specified. I use it to shoot full 1080 HD (1920x1080) video at 30 fps. Produces nice output. It is small and lightweight and the Motorsports package I ordered comes with lots of mounts. So far I have used the suction cup mount (on the side of my car) and the optional head strap. Both of which work fine.

Some issues worth noting:

* Even with the (recommended) open back, there is more wind noise while driving than I would like.

* There is no external microphone jack (in which case I would plug in a wind shielded mic)

* The icons on the front (for setting video vice still camera mode, etc.) are very small and hard to read.

* It does not come with any internal memory or an included SD card. So be sure to order some memory when you buy this video camera.

I have driven in the rain (with the closed housing back) and the case protects the camera just fine.

There is no video editing software included and Microsoft MovieMaker is a joke for editing video. So I purchased Pinnacle Studio HD (about $50) which is great for my editing needs (cutting down sequences, combining videos, adding titles, scene transitions, etc.).

A great product for the money

I bought the GoPro HD Motorsports HERO for track use in my race car after seeing them installed in several cars in the paddock this last year. Everyone I talked to liked them, and with a sub $300 price I figured it was worth a try. I installed it with the roll bar attachment option for a resent track day at Laguna Seca, and was very impressed by the picture quality. Set at 720p / 60fps, the video looked pretty darn close to in-car footage you see on a TV broadcast. The wide-angle lens showed the actions of the driver clearly as well as a nice view of the track. Colors are sharp and accurate, and the auto-focus worked very well. It's pretty easy to use once you get acustom to the simple two button operation with tiny LCD screen that only shows the settings. The case and mounting seem very sturdy, and battery life has been very good. If you purchase a 32gb card you'll have plenty of storage for a whole day at the track. My only two issues are that when you turn the unit back on to start a track session, you need to re-set the video settings to where you want it - it should just default to whatever your last setting was. Also, aiming the camera is a bit of a challenge since there is no viewfinder or LCD picture display. You kind of just point it straight out toward the windshield and hope for the best. Luckily with the wide angle lens, you would have to be pretty far out of line to not get a good viewing area. Personally, I'd give up a little size and pay an extra $50 for a small LCD screen on back for aiming. Overall, a pretty darn nice little camera for the money.

I like it

I'm 60 years old my eyes are not as good as they used to be and I know it's probably not right to compare the Contour HD to a full size camcorder but I also own a Panasonic AG-HMC40 and the picture quality of the Contour HD is pretty darn close (my opinion) to what I get with the Panasonic AG-HMC40. The Contour Hd actually does better in low light conditions. I also bought the water proof case for the Contour HD and took a few under water shots of my dogs swimming in a creek, I was amazed at how well they turned out. With a little imagination you should have a lot of fun with this amazing little camcorder.

Not happy, lots of distortion

I purchased the 1080P contour for an event at Laguna Seca. Everything arrived ontime and was all set for the event. After the event I setup the software for playback and every video I took had horizontal lines distorting the picture! Needless to say I was pretty upset. I called Amazon and explain the problem and it was very easy to get a replacement 1080P and memory card. I received the replacement units the very next day! Excellent service by Amazon.

I charged the replacement unit and tested it by taking a video of my son. It had the same exact distortion as the original unit! There is no distortion when it is perfectly still but as soon as you move it around with your hand it would have these horizontal lines that made the picture completely unwatchable.

I returned this unit as well and have not purchased another camera since. Very disappointed with it.

lens quality is mediocre

Overall camera design is good, especially big sliding button is very convenient to deal with, when using gloves.
However, the most annoying fact for me was blur on the left and right screen edges.
I've bought both ContourHD 720 and ContourHD 1080 models, and both went to trash can for the same reason.
Seems that lens quality is mediocre even for that cheap camera. That's the main "no-no".
And I'm not the single upset person with similar complaints on lens quality, if you go to vholdr support site, you will see plenty of other poor sods with similar issues.
Blur is either at the center of the screen or at the screen edges easily see at at any videomode.
Bought GoPro HD, which is less convenient and more fragile at handling, but at least has non-flawed image quality.

not splash-proof

This camcorder is not really water-resistant or splash-proof. If it is splashed on, some water WILL get into the lens chamber through the gap between the lens protector and the rubber ring, fogging everything up and ending your fun for the day.

You can let the moisture out by taking the lens chamber apart(not a difficult task: just removing one screw). Based on my casual observation, I believe that it is unlikely that the moisture trapped inside the lens chamber can move further and reach key electric components to cause permanent damages; so technically you can call that "water-resistant."

However, if the lens is fogged up, the device becomes practically useless and it is hard to fix it in the field (better wait until you get home lest getting more water or dirt into the device).

An easy solution might be the VholdR 3300 Waterproof Case accessory. I just ordered one and will let you know how well it works.

I give it a four-star because I believe that Twenty20 was sloppy in designing the seal mechanism of the lens chamber. For a >$300 device, it is shocking that they attempt to use one cheap and not very tightly fit rubber ring to keep water out. They don't even bother to apply some silicon grease, which could have helped greatly in keeping water out. My $10 flashlight does better than that! In a nutshell, this device is not splash-proof and it could have been!

Although I give it a four-star, I consider ContourHD the best wearable camcorder on the market. Picture quality is very good and its operation is intuitive and simple.

Below I am also going to make a list of ContourHD's shortcomings. Please consider them more as a wish list since products from other companies are not doing any better.
(1) I was thinking about using it to record video during my long road trip, powered by vehicle power to USB adapter. It turned out that the device can't record video when connecting to power source or computer, and thus recoding capacity is limited by battery capacity.
(2) to be continued...

Black Diamond's Quicksilver Screwgate is updated with a locking gate and screwgate sleeve, and now shares the same body as the Quicksilver2, with its wide rope-bearing width of 9.5mm and an angled nose for easy clipping. The relatively light weight of the Quicksilver Screwgate (56 g) makes it great for big wall and alpine anchors, while a deep basket allows climbers to pile in the runners and slings. Black Diamond created this biner for climbers who place a premium on weight, yet demand workhorse durability and high strength out of their lockers. ?Vendor *Comes in assorted colors.

Great carabiner good price

This is a great product. Lightweight and durable. Good for anything from actual climbing to attaching a hammock to a tree.

Great 'biner

This is the best carabiner I've found on Amazon for me. It has great strength (5600 lbs along the long axis) and is smaller than the Black Diamond Mini Pearabiner Screwgate Ink Blue, Screwgate and actually is also cheaper and lighter. Some people may prefer different types of locking mechanisms, but I like this kind for attaching heavy equipment to trees, or perhaps a hammock above bear climbing level. The locking mechanism won't disengage until you make it, and it is easy to do so with one hand.

This is NOT the HD Helmet Hero your buying!!!

I ordered this, thinking it was the HD HELMET Hero as it states in the title. This is NOT true. The HD Helmet Hero comes with helmet straps for solid and vented helmets and also comes with a head strap for use without a helmet. The item I received was NOT the HELMET Hero, but the HD Motorsports version with the suction cup. Very disappointing... I will be returning this item for a refund.

Does a great job, but...

I've used the HD Hero quite a few times now, and as the other reviews said, it does a very nice job. It's nice and compact, seems to be quite tough, and takes really nice hands-free POV stills and video. There are a few things I've had to look out for, however. One is that with the wide angle lens and no way to see what the camera is seeing, it's very common to get "warped" shots - ones where the horizon bends drastically up or down. It's the nature of the lens, of course, but something to look out for. If you can get it pointed properly the shots come out very nicely. The screen for settings is also barely usable. It's simple enough to use, but difficult to see. With the case on the buttons don't feel very positive, so once in a while I find that I didn't actually start the camera rolling. As a result just about every clip I take starts and ends with me looking at the camera to make sure it's on or off. Not a huge deal, but shouldn't be necessary either.

The other issues are ones that I think can easily be fixed by GoPro. First, the battery on mine is far more difficult to remove than any other camera I've had. It seems to be partly due to the slick coating on the battery label, and partly due to the way the battery snaps in. It's not a big deal when you're in the house, but out in the field changing a battery can be a challenge. Similarly, the memory card is a bit tougher to get out than on any of my other cameras. Again, not a problem in the house, but more tricky than it should be when you're trying to quickly swap cards so you can keep shooting. The gizmos that connect the camera to your helmet (I also got a bike clamp) are all plastic, and would benefit by a more rubberized surface or something. It seems like it would be very easy to over tighten the clamps (trying to get the whole setup to hold still) and break the plastic. I have a few ideas to work around that, but haven't had a chance to try them out yet.

Image quality is better than I expected for both video and stills. I saw the online samples, which are good, but the real deal is even better. Overall this camera is great fun to use, and since it fits in my pocket I find myself taking it with me often. If you want a camera that you won't have to worry about knocking around and getting wet, this is a great choice.

Rating :

Surprisingly good image quality, great wide angle view

I bought this from REI using the annual 20% member discount on a lark and it has turned out to be a great purchase.

The video quality is surprisingly good for such a cheap (relatively speaking) camera. The 720p is better than that from my Canon SD940IS, which does not even provide 1080p. There are many sample videos on YouTube from myself and others, just search for the product name.

I haven't used the still mode much, but the pictures do not seem nearly as good as that of dedicated still cameras (like the aforementioned camera).

I have not tried out the helmet mounts yet, though I did use the included head straps for a couple of videos. These turned out to be nausea-inducing, as I tended to turn my head a lot. I don't think the helmet mounts will be any better, as I would still be turning my head a lot in most sports.

I ended up ordering a GoPro Chest Mount Harness for HERO Cameras and the videos from that were much more stable.

I thought I would be using the 1080p mode a lot, but for the coxing videos I have been using this for so far the 720p wide-angle mode is much more suitable, you can see much more of the boat and the oars; also, at 60fps slow motion video would be much clearer.

The choice they made to leave out a display paid off in battery life - 2.5 hours of continuous on time is awesome! The control mechanism is fairly unfriendly, but you get used to it... not sure why they couldn't have put in a mode dial though, it wouldn't have been that much more expensive, even for the waterproof case part - Canon cameras have had this in their waterproof cases for many years.

I didn't even think about the sound, but after reading the product literature I have to say I agree with their comments about sound quality. Looking back over some other videos taken with still and video cameras I find that there is a lot of wind noise in most of them, whereas this camera in its waterproof case lets you hear ambient noise without the wind noise.

All in all, a great product. A little pricey, but great for what it does.

Rating :

Best camera on the market.

This is hands down the best affordable POV camera on the market. The picture is amazing, especially in good light. The formats are great and the mounting options are only limited to your imagination. Couldn't be happier with this camera.

Useless product

The design of the S Biner is such that it is difficult to open only one side of the biner. The result is pathetic, when removing the biner form a pack or article of clothing anything on the clip is bound to fall off. This makes the product rather deceptive, it looks good, but has no real use.

Great product for specific uses!

These S-biners are GREAT! They fill several needs I've been having. I work in a data center and these S-biners #4 and #5 are great for hooking my tools and laptop bags to the cage/frame instead of laying them on the floor where people could trip or step on them. We have one set of keys to the server cages and I use an S-biner #1 on my badge to hold on to the keys which is great way to know quickly if I have the keys and don't leave the building with them. I keep quite a bit of stuff in my laptop bag and S-binders #1 and #2 are great way to add extra orginization! I do agree with one of the other reviewers in that S-biners are not very good at keeping keys together in my pocket, but then again, I find small carbiners work much better for that.

Very Useful to have handy

I can't believe that I've lived 28 years without S-clips!! they are amazing.

I originally purchased these to attach my keychain to my dog's leash during walks. These are perfect and make it really easy to switch my keys from one leash to another.

After using them for that purchase, I can see them being useful in numerous situations. I haven't used other clips, but they seem pretty easy to open and stay closed well. I wouldn't use them for climbing mountains, but they work for holding keys or a camera during a walk!

Rating :

Work well, much better than carabiners

I used to use carabiners for a variety of things but S-Biners work much better in most cases. The problem with standard carabiner is that everything is attached to the same "loop." For example, If you have a set of keys, and maybe other items, and then attach that to a backpack. When you open the standard carabiner, to remove it from the backpack, your keys or anything on it can fall off if you're not careful. Because s-biner have two separate attachment areas, all of you loose items can remain securely attached to the s-biner when you unclip it from your backpack, belt loop or whatever.

They seem very sturdy and I expect them to last a long time. It's very easy to clip and unclip things, even with one hand.
This particular set is nice. You can use the small ones to attach a small key ring to your belt. The large one can be used to join two larger items together, such as attaching a small camera bag to another bag.

The only downside with these is that they are more expensive that a carabiner. However, the extra cost is more than made up for by the convenience and ease of use.

Try these, you won't go back to the standard carabiner.

Useful Anywhere....

Everyone should own a good supply of these S-clips, as I call them. They have an infinite variety of uses around the house, or away from it. I have carried them along on my hiking and camping trips for a good many years. You can easily attach a variety of carry along items to your belt or other gear, and they make securing a tent a cinch to not only anchor down, but release in a jiffy. Around the yard I use them to hang my bird feeders. They secure any feeder effortlessly, and as always with any use, some simple pressure on the clip releases it. No longer will it be necessary to untie and pull tight a guide line on your tent, hammock, or any other such item. Just unclasp and either add or subtract a clip and you are tight and secure. They are extremely strong, and you can easily use two or more together if a longer reach is necessary, as well as easily interchange sizes. All these clips are stainless and will stand up under the harshest conditions for many years with little wear to show for it. I have personally never had one fall apart or fail in any way.

Amazon makes it easy to stock up on the variety of sizes by offering free shipping on a bundle. I suggest you buy this handy three size which is very versatile in bulk, or package it together with other sizes to make the free shipping quota. You will pay the same price or cheaper than any local hardware store, and you won't even have to leave the comfort of your home to get your hands on them. One of the best and most versatile pieces of hardware you can have handy for the home, or on the trail... Recommended.

Question : Why is outdoor recreation under sports?
I would think that it would be under games and recreation. I do not consider the subcategories such as camping and climbing as sporting events.

Answer:
There's more to 'sport' than sporting events.Pretty much any activity of a physical nature done for pleasure fits under the broad heading of 'sport'. I think camping, climbing, etc. are much more closely related to sport than to, say ... Checkers or knitting or stamp-collecting.I don't consider blasting Bambi with a high-powered rifle to be much of a sport, and golf is far more of a religion than anything else, but there you have it.I can see your argument for camping not being a sport, but if you've ever wrestled with tent poles on a windy day, you might change your mind!

I am just starting to get interested in outdoor recreation and survivalism and I am currently trying my hand at camping, climbing, hiking, orienteering etc etc. I've bought a S.A.K as I thought that for £15 all it's functions would come in handy around the house as well as outdoors, and I wouldn't be using it too heavily. My question is, for when I head out in to the British countryside for long periods, should I have another dedicated knife for heavier work? The blade on a S.A.K isn't great. If so what sort of knife should I opt for, with a budget of around £20-£30? There are so many types and materials I'm really lost! Sheath-knife, folding knife, carbon blade, steel....What sort of size blade is ideal? I aim to be outdoors for up to a fortnight at a time in British wilds (breacon, exmoor) and so want something capable but that isn't going to seem over the top. Where should I keep the two knives, in a pocket or my pack? Thanks for any serious help!PS, I know I've asked a question similar to this before but I'm hoping for a definitive answer. Also I am well aware of British knife laws so please don't bring that argument up, nor the fact that knife crime is rampant in certain towns across the UK- I'm a responsible adult and the knife will be used for what it was made for, not killing teenagers.

Answer:
In life I would buy the tool that is designed for the job. If you want a knife, buy a knife, if you want a bottle opener buy a bottle opener. So yes, I would get a good quality knife. Blade about 5" long should be OK and make sure the blade is good and able to be sharpened. You get what you pay for afterall - and £15 for 10 tools or £15 for one tool wonder which would be better quality.Apparantly you should go for one with a wooden handle (unvarnished),and I think Ray Mears does one that he (obviously) recommends - looks OK.Fixed blade is better - a sheath knife - wont collpse and chop your fingers, failing that a lock knife. You are unlikely to need a knife in a hurry when you are out, you should have time to get it out of your pack - so dont carry it in your pockets (easy to forget about it, go to the pub and then get arrested for carrying a knife). If you are stopped when you have your pack on you with the knife, a police officer will appreciate that you arnt carrying it to cause trouble and is part of your outdoor kit (unlikely you will get stopped though)All in all, be sensible. Get a 5" fixed blade with wooden handle and a good quality blade. You might want to invest in a stone to sharpen it with too.

Question : which collage is right for me?
Ok so i absolutely love the outdoors, scuba diving, biking, rock climbing, you name it. I would love to go to a collage where i could easily do all kinds of outdoor stuff. Some where in the mountains would be nice. Any where with a beautiful campus and surrounding area. I would like a medium size school, around 5,000-15,000, but if it is around 16,000-22,000, and has a beautiful campus and surrounding area, with lots of outdoor recreation, i might consider it. Im not 100% sure what i want to do as a career but lately i've bin thinking a phycologist might be a good career for me. One last thing, I live in St. louis, so it would be nice if i could go to a collage that wouldn't be too expensive to travel or too far away, but i am flexible, and i would consider a college that was a little too far away if everything els seemed like a perfect match.

Answer:
It's spelled "college".

Question : Where should I take a new woman friend for a date?
My old dating habits from many years ago were mostly catch a show or go out for a coffee. Now I'm in more of a mood for more exciting and stimulating outings. My hobbies are of an outdoor recreation type, such as rock-climbing, kayaking, etc. Would something like that be appropriate? Thanks for your time.

Answer:
I would love to try something new like rock climbing or kayaking on a date. Maybe as a warm up for future outings, you can ask her to go to a rock climbing wall with you so that she can try it out (probably less scary than climbing a real rock if she's never done anything like that before). I would work this in with more traditional date-like things like maybe a nice picnic for lunch after paddling or hiking all morning.
