Overall very good

I recently got into recreational bicycling and I needed a water bottle to replace the very cheap plastic one I had. I purchased a blue 27 oz. Klean Kanteen. I keeps my water cold for a very long time and the water doesn't taste metallic at all. The only complaint I have with the bottle I got was that the blue paint is coming off very easily. I've been trying my best to keep it from rubbing up on sharp metallic corners or falling on the concrete, however, the paint is still scratching off. Had I known this, I would've gotten the Klean Kanteen without color. That's the only complaint I have with this bottle; it functions well otherwise and overall I'm happy with my purchase.

Kool Kleen Kanteen

Klean Kanteen Stainless Steel Water Bottle with Poly Loop Cap (12-Ounce, Orange Sunset)
This is nice! Love the subtle orange. Size is right for when you want to carry just a
little refreshment and don't want a clunker-bottle weighing you down. Water tastes a lot
better from it. A couple of..... good Gulps.

No more plastic bottles!

I love the stainless steel water bottle and no more worries about things that leak out of plastic water bottles. I try to keep this filled and with me at all times. The larger "mouth" makes it easy to clean.

Rating :

pretty good product

I purchased the 12 oz with a sports cap for my daughter. The bottle looks great, I love the design of it. However, I'd like it much better if it was insulated. We live in the south, and if you put cold beverages in it, the bottle sweats almost immediately. That's my only gripe with it, other than that, I love it! I will probably buy a couple of bigger ones for my husband.

Tinny Taste

I might be hyper-sensitive to metallic tastes since others don't seem to have this problem, but for me drinking out of this bottle is like drinking out of an old canteen. I washed it multiple times; the taste never left. It's unfortunate, the bottle was great in every other way, I'm sure the water quality is fine but I'll probably give it to someone who would enjoy it more.

Simply Awesome

This stuff is awesome. The taste is negligible (much less than a pill iodine treatment). It works as directed (i never got sick). Boyscouts use it in Philmont, NM. I believe, over a hundred thousand scouts come through each year, and it works fine for them (this is where i heard about it).

I Definitely would recommend this to a friend. & Even bought one for a friend. :-)

I don't understand why there are still pill iodine treatments out there. $8 for 15 or 30 or even 50 pills is a rip off compared to Polar Pure.

Excelent Product!

First of all a note regarding the reviews I have seen complaining of an empty bottle: The bottle is not empty, old, expired, or anything else. That tiny bit of Iodine in the base will last longer than you can keep track of / not break the bottle. Honest. For usage, read and follow the directions on the bottle.

I have used this product for several years now, including extensively for international travel (latin america, middle east) and it has worked superbly. I am still on the original container, which is showing no sign of depletion. By contrast in the same time I would have gone through several bottles of pills, which also spoil in air.

There are a few tricks for usage:
1) If you do not care for the taste of iodine it is possible to convert the iodine in your water to iodide by adding a small amount of vitamin C (lemon works well) to the treated water AFTER letting it sit for the required treatment time. Iodide is colorless and tasteless, unlike its brown chemical cousin. This should only be done after allowing water treatment to occur however, since it will render the iodine ineffective for treatment

2) If concerned about viruses you can use a reduced dose of iodine after a filter. This is quite effective

3) Keep the bottle somewhere warm (outside of a pack in the sun works well) This will increase solubility and thus the amount of water you can treat at a time.

Anyway, I hope this is helpful, and happy travels!

A real hit in camp

Backpacking with a group of experienced back country people, this became the most popular item in camp. It's so much easier than pumping and has almost no iodine taste at all. I wish the cap had measurement lines so you could tell 1.2 capfulls from 1.5 and I wish you didn't have to bring the water up to 68 degrees to ensure all crypto was killed, but that's really minor compared to the convenience of use and safety it affords when the water source is uncertain.

No Tamper-Proof Packaging

My bottle of Polar Pure came without any tamper protection (the lid sealed somehow) so how do I know it wasn't tampered with? Is this normal or does the company send them out this way?

How can I be sure I'm not being poisoned instead of protected?

Also, many people are confused when they get the bottle of Polar Pure and see the tiny amount inside.

I found this on the Polar Pure website:

"Question: I received my bottle of Polar Pure and was surprised to find out how very few crystals are actually in the bottle. Is this normal?
Yes this is normal. Each bottle of Polar Pure contains approximately 1 teaspoon of iodine crystals. While this looks like a small amount, it is capable of treating up to 2000 quarts/liters of water. The average backpacker will have a bottle of Polar Pure for many years before the iodine has been depleted. As long as you can see iodine crystals in the bottom of your Polar Pure bottle, it is safe and effective to use."

Even if this is the greatest product in the world I'm still wondering why it isn't tamper-proof.

Polar Pure meets all expectations

I purchased my first bottle of Polar Pure in preparation for a week-long backpacking trip with my youngest son in Michigan's Upper Peninsula at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. In the past I had used a combination of iodine tablets and physical filtering. Polar Pure was so simple to use, mixed easily, produced reliable results, and included appropriate safeguards against stray crystals getting into your water. The iodine taste was minimal and easily masked with the use of powdered drink flavoring. I don't plan to use anything but Polar Pure for future trips.

Amazingly small and light

Weighs not much more than a bottle of water purification tablets, and without the nasty taste. A must have for your daypack, cargo pockets or survival kit.

A bit of carbon dust will be there, but it is harmless.

Yes, on a real backwoods hike, you need better. But this is so small and light, it is more of a survival kit item, as opposed to your everyday water filter.

Rating :

Pretty good, but be prepared for initial carbon

This system is much like everyone mentions. It's light, weighing about as much as 5 quarters. It's compact, about the size of a roll of pennies. The filtration unit seems pretty sturdy and would probably not crack if dropped. The straw seems OK, about the same quality as the flexi-straws you get with $10 plastic water bottles. I'd worry that the straw might crack with repeated use, but it should be fine if you use it only for emergency purposes (i.e. rarely).

As with all carbon-based filters, this one has a lot of dust when you first use it. I forgot this detail and was surprised by the straw full of coffee-colored water on my first draw. There is a note on the unit that warns about this dust (which I didn't notice until later). The note implies that all of the dust would disappear after the first draw. That is not true. I've drawn about 4 cups of water through the system, yet there is still very noticeable dust in the water. It's no longer the color of coffee, more like weak tea. I'm OK with this, but my wife and daughter would complain (of course, they probably wouldn't complain too long if there's no other water).

In sum, I think this is a good product and recommend it for emergency use. But I suggest drawing a few cups of water to remove the carbon before you store it in your emergency kit.

for all who enjoy the outdoors. Have used it in many sources of water, delta to high sierras, no problems whatsoever. great for ultralight camping, treking, safety, emergency preparedness and even all around just fun toy for the kids, this filter seems to be a fantastic way to assure a form of clean rehydration when and if necassary.(please be a wise guardian with your children when I mention it as a toy for them, they need to be guided in life and safety and that's your job.)

you don't have this yet? :)

ok, here's the deal. put this in your wish list...next time you need some $$ to get up to the free shipping...add one. then keep doing that until everyone in your family has one of these for their emergency pack.

Tablets are great and light, but still a pain to use. boiling is best, but sometimes you just can't. this is less than an ounce! It's not perfect, but it's so small and light...it will be WITH YOU when you need it. better safe than sorry. It will taste bad initially (carbon) but just spit out the first few draws and you'll be fine.

It's a water filter

I have owned or used many of the various filters on the market over the years. They all do pretty much the same thing to one degree or another. Some are better than others. Some have features which may make them more appealing to certain folks that may be seen as a detriment by other folks. You pay your money you take your own point of view. I finally broke down and coughed up the dough for a Katadyn not too long ago. I still have a perfectly serviceable MSR Waterworks and have been satisfied with it overall. I've also owned a few Volkswagens in my day but would love to own a Mercedes. This is a very well designed and engineered filter. It's been on the market for decades with very little change in it's design. In that time it has been at the forefront of portable water filtration technology and is considered by many to be a benchmark for comparison. I grant that I sound like a corporate shill spouting these platitudes but in an age and society where "disposable" and "engineered obsolescence" are regrettably industry standards, it's good to find a product that bucks the trend.

The M1A1 Abrams of water filters!

We deferred buying this filter solely because of the initial price. There was always some 'other' gear we needed or that needed repairing before we could spend nearly $300. I have to admit, putting off the purchase was shear stupidity. I suffered the use of various tablets, potions, and low-end filters for years. I probably spent the cost of three Katadyn Pocket filters on those lesser methods. Or, I humped water, at 8 lbs/gal, and expended my savings in sweat and worrying about water conservation in remote, arid places.

I have not yet used this device. But I cannot wait to do so.

I took it apart according to the instructions and inspected it. Then, I did a shake-down run using household water. Nothing would be worse than failing to test a vital piece of equipment until it gets to the field for the first time! It functions well and is solidly built. But, it is also a pretty precision piece of gear and is not moron-proof. Drop the ceramic and it is toast. To avoid this, do not disassemble without taking care not to drop, damage, or lose the parts.

But for any person comfortable with living under harsh conditions, the use and care of the filter will be a breeze. If I were to be hypercritical, I would say it is a bit heavy. But it is a whole lot lighter than a gallon of water.

One area Katadyn could improve on is the carrying case. Although the filter is well-built, the case offers no protection in a fall or if a pack were dropped in an emergency. I purchased a padded water bottle carrier (Cheaper-Than-Dirt Item #MOLLE-741). While wrapping the filter in spare clothing would give protection, the case fits the filter well, is padded, AND has a nice exterior pocket in which to carry the accessories as well as a bottle of Polar-Pure, a charcoal after-filter, and extra charcoal. All of my water-processing gear is all in one place, saving me the trouble of digging around in the pack when water is short. I also carry a spare bite-valve for my hydration pack in the pouch.

Do NOT be as foolish as I was. Do NOT put off buying this and mistakenly believe it is 'too much money' to spend on one item. It is worth the price.

my critique

I recieved the Katadyne Pocket Water Filter in reasonably prompt time and I was impressed with the apparent workmanship quality of same. I also bought a carbon accessory filter to use in conjunction with the pocket water filter. I have now used the above products for a little less than a month, drawing only from chlorinated tap water at home in Florida and from tap water here in the Ukraine so to date, I've not really set it to the ultimate test of providing potable water from an outside source such as a stream, river, or lake.

My intention in buying the above products is to access clean drinking water while traveling abroad and especially while at home during times of civil disorder, tyranny, and other like emergency situations possible in the not-too-distant future. My feeling at this point is that this was a smart choice and it will come in handy during any future wilderness backpack trips also.

The Best...

The Katadyn Pocket Water Microfilters are simply the best such devices on the market. Period. I have purchased more than a dozen over the years for friends and family members to use in their emergency preparedness supplies. Simple, rugged, reliable, and beautifully made, these little filters are tops.

Awesome!

Hands down the best portable water filter that I've used. It doesn't remove any smells or chemicals from the water unless you buy the optional carbon post filter. If I had to do again, I'd buy in a heart beat. Despite one review, this is truly a quality built item. It's basically a milled aluminum filter, with a fine clay composite mix for a filter. You simply wipe the filter with a scotch bright pad lightly to remove contaminants. It would have been nice if it automatically came with the polishing carbon filter, but it's not a big deal. Works well and should last a very, very long time.

Awesome filter!

I love this filter, it has all the features you could want in a filter and is very user friendly. If you read the instructions and do the maintenence that is required it will last a long time with no issues. The things you need to do to maintain it are simple like lubricating the O rings and disinfecting it when you get home from a hiking trip are common sense stuff. You may have to scrub the ceramic filter when out in the field after heavy use in high sediment water (not rocket science). I bought an extra carbon kit to replace the old carbon when the water starts to taste funny or smell, that cost about $10 dollars. This filter is easy to use and can clean up to 500 gallons of water before replacing the main filter core (about $30 dollars). Another thing to remember is that Katadyn is a great company, if you have any issues with your filter give them a call and they will help you out. Having the versatility to switch from one filter media to two depending on your water quality is a nice option and you get more bang for your buck with this unit at $80 dollars for 500 gallons of purified drinking water!

Rating :

ok

it's ok. sometimes it'll leak out from middle if pump too fast, this can be dangerous if you're in cold conditions. Also if using in below freezing temps water will freeze over the ceramic filter allowing no water to pass through and a lot more leakage from sides. This is the only water filter I've ever used so have nothing to compair it to.

Rating :

plastic housing broke within first 4 uses

The plastic housing that goes over the pistons broke almost immediately. I can't find out where to get a replacement. Our Sweetwater was much more reliable, although it, too, broke twice.
I'm not impressed.

Rating :

Really like it!

This is my first portable water filter. I've used it several times with relatively clean mountain spring water, and with city water. It definitely works well and makes the water taste good. It comes with a nice case and is easy to use.

The negative side is minor. The filter takes a long time to dry out (several days), which you're supposed to do when it won't be used for a while. Instead it seems the better thing to do is pump a mild solution of chlorine/bleach through it before storage (as instructed) and then pump lots of water through it before reuse. Also, the replacement carbon packets seem outrageously overpriced, yet I haven't yet found an alternate source of replacement carbon (I think it can work for a long time).

As for the older negative feedback, I can see how the inlet could break off if pressed hard against something, so take care with it. I'd also not try to pump too hard or fast, as there is a lot of resistance in the pump and is meant to move slowly. And if you avoid filtering really dirty water, it will likely last much longer and work better; this filter is not a replacement for viral sanitation (in some cases use chlorine/tablets and then filter, or vice-verse).

Rating :

Fantastic filter

This is my first filtration system that I purchased before a 5-day trip to Isle Royale N.P. Used it once at home to work the kinks out and never had a problem. Filtered water from inland creeks, lakes as well as Gitchee Gumee (Lake Superior) herself. Fast filling, low-effort pumping, and most importantly great tasting water no matter the source. Some of the other hikers on the trail had the MSR Mini-Works EX which I considered when looking at filters, but the Vario pulled water faster and tasted better than that brand/model. The screw-onto Nalgene feature is great, and they hose attachment for Camelbaks works well too.

On recommendation of some of the other reviews, I did purchase and carry a backup ceramic filter in case of breakage and I did use coffee filters over the input bob to block large sedement. No need for the spare ceramic filter on the trip and the coffee filter trick worked great.

My one and only beef is how long the inner fiberglass filter takes to dry out. We have been home a couple weeks and my cleaning solution and rinse water is still slowly coming out when I pump it. Other than that, go for it, you won't regret this filter!

Questions & Answers
Question : What is a good way to increase hydration?
Yes drinking water is the obvious answer, but I need more than that. I just bought a scale that measures hydration. I should be at 50% but I'm only at 30% and that 30% is after adding 64 oz of water to my diet each day.I know I should stop drinking cafinated products, but what else can I do?

Answer:
If you want to get serious about it muscle holds more water than fat. Try some exercises-I wish I knew hold old you were- maybe some weight training. And keep in mind that sports drinks like Gatorade really do help. You definitely should lose the caffeine, but you already know that.

Question : Is drinking club soda or seltzer an alternative to regular water for hydration purposes?
I know the need for hydration and it benefits, but I am not a "plain" water fan so therefore I don't hydrate as I should.

Answer:
Yes you can drink club soda or seltzer in place of water. They are the same thing with the one difference being that one has been carbonated. Ideally you could consume any beverage with the exception of alcohol or caffeine products and they would also be hydrating as well but you would be consuming a lot of empty calories. That is why water is recommended.

Question : What should I do to buy cheap hydration packs with low cost delivery?
I have a problem. I'd like to purchase hydration packs but there's no good offer. Either price is really big or the sipping is too expensive. Maybe you know a shop online which offers cheap shipping. Thanx so much for the information!

Answer:
Good price, cheap delivery and large assortment of hydration packs. Here http://seerch.com/category/940/Hydration-Packs-and-Vests/ you can get all you need.

Question : How to tell the formula of "water of hydration" in a crystal?
I have made Iron (II) Sulphate crystal which is green in colour. I need to know the amount of H20 it contains as "water of hydration" to complete my report. Can anyone tell me how to differenciate it because there are several kinds of Iron (II) sulphate with different amount of H20 it brings.

Answer:
FeSO4*H2O or FeSO4*7H2O

Question : How do you assess urine color for determining hydration?
I am told that the color of one's urine can be a good indicator of hydration level. My urine is often light yellowish, even though I make a strong effort to drink a lot of water. Regardless, the color I see is, of course, diluted with toilet water. Is the color of this diluted solution acceptable for the color test, or would I have to observe the color of my concentrated, undiluted urine? Does this difference not change the significance of the color?

Answer:
Healthy urine is determined by light yellow - almost clear if well hydrated. The colour in the pan is perfectly acceptable if there are no other symptoms when urinating.

Question : What is a good hydration backpack for long dirt bike rides?
I am looking for a hydration backpack to take with me when i ride my dirt bike that can hold gear and withstand a beating and keep going any ideas?

Answer:
Look for a bag with at least a 3-liter reservoir. Mine is a Deuter, purchased from Aerostich. I also have a camelbak with a smaller bladder, 1.5 liters I think, and minimal additional storage capacity. The bigger reservoir is a must for long, hot rides. I will go through most of that in a day of off-pavement touring. On a strenuous trail ride, I may refill it once or twice in the course of a day.

Question : What effects can alcohol and caffeine have on hydration levels in the body?
What effects can alcohol and caffeine have on hydration levels in the body? Or if anyone can find a link to a good site I would be very greatful! Thanks!

Answer:
Both chemicals are mild diuretics and will cause you to urinate off some free body water causing mild dehydration.

Question : How do you get soap flavor out of a hydration pack?
I used dish soap and water to clean out my Platypus hydration pack and now it tastes like soap (yuck!). I've been trying to de-soap the taste by rinsing it out with cold water (hot or warm water makes it foam), but I've had no luck. Does anyone have any ideas?I tried the white vinegar but it didn't work...

Answer:
Randy's right white vinegar will do the job.Next time you clean it use 1 table spoon of clorox per gallon let soak for an hour or so then rinse good.

Question : Are there any thermal kits for Novara Hydration packs?
I have a Novara Buzz hydration pack. I am planning on going skiing and i am afraid the water will freeze in the tube. The only thermal kits i have found are for CamelBak packs. Do you know if there are any for Novara packs?

Answer:
Yes, contact the manufacturer.Good luck.

Question : What is water of hydration? How is this different from a compound that is simply "wet"?
What is water of hydration? How is this different from a compound that is simply "wet"?

Answer:
Water of hydration refers to water molecules that are bound to a molecule (via hydrogen bonding) and are incorporated into the crystal lattice. This usually occurs in a specific stoichiometric ratio (water to product) and forms a stable hydrate.Wet simply means there is water on the surface of the product.EDIT - Chloralhydrate, I disagree w/ your answer. You're describing solvation, the process by which charges are stabilized by a solvent, in this case water.
