GoPro's HD Motorsports HERO is the world's highest performance 1080p HD on-board video and still photo camera. Professional quality 1080p, 960p and 720p HD resolutions record at 30 frames per second (60 fps in 720p). The HD Motorsports HERO easily mounts to any helmet, motorcycle, ATV, car, plane, jet ski, boat, snowmobile or other vehicle. The camera's quick-release mounting design makes it easy to re-position the camera around your vehicle for professional quality HD video from several angles. Record up to 2.5 hours on a single charge and up to 9 hours total on a 32GB SD card (not included). Included are mounts for two helmets and three vehicles, as well as a suction cup for maximum versatility and convenience. The housing is waterproof to 180' / 60m. GoPro's obsession with sound has conquered the wind. At 85 mph on a motorcycle, you'll enjoy the throaty sound of your motor, not the wind. Inside even the quietest street cars, hear the pull of your motor...not the drone of the wind and road. Included is a 1100mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery that lasts for up to 2.5 hours of constant recording. With optional accessories, you can also plug the camera into a wall outlet, cigarette lighter, or with any USB-compatible power adapter, wire it directly to your vehicle's electrical system. The battery will charge while you record. The camera can also shoot automatic 5MP photos at 2/5/10/30 and 60 second intervals during your drive or ride, hands free. Pre

Real HD in a small and light package

This little wonder works as specified. I use it to shoot full 1080 HD (1920x1080) video at 30 fps. Produces nice output. It is small and lightweight and the Motorsports package I ordered comes with lots of mounts. So far I have used the suction cup mount (on the side of my car) and the optional head strap. Both of which work fine.

Some issues worth noting:

* Even with the (recommended) open back, there is more wind noise while driving than I would like.

* There is no external microphone jack (in which case I would plug in a wind shielded mic)

* The icons on the front (for setting video vice still camera mode, etc.) are very small and hard to read.

* It does not come with any internal memory or an included SD card. So be sure to order some memory when you buy this video camera.

I have driven in the rain (with the closed housing back) and the case protects the camera just fine.

There is no video editing software included and Microsoft MovieMaker is a joke for editing video. So I purchased Pinnacle Studio HD (about $50) which is great for my editing needs (cutting down sequences, combining videos, adding titles, scene transitions, etc.).

I really want to love this camera.

This is close to being a perfect example of a wearable/mountable POV camera. But unfortunately, close isn't quite good enough.

The pros:
Video is awesome, in all of the modes.
Stills are very good quality, the timelapse feature is fantastic.
It's waterproof.
The mounting options are (almost) limitless.

The cons:
It's awkward to set up. Menu is like something from 20 years ago.
Firmware issues have yet to be addressed by the manufacturer. This is inexcusable as the camera has been available for sale for nearly a year.
Audio is useless. They could have saved weight and cost by just not including a mic. The only instance where it even sort of works is when mounted right near a loudish sound you want to highlight, such as an engine.
There are too many instances where "Macgyvering" is required to get the desired result. The quick release mount rattles so you need to tape the base plate, the non waterproof back allows too much wind noise, so you need to tape over the openings, the shutter button rattles, so you need to tape over that. Moral of the story: BUY TAPE.
The support by the manufacturer is not quite adequate. I realize it's a small start up company, but for all the issues with the use of the camera and the handling/editing of the files, they really need to release some conclusive videos or articles to address these concerns.

People who might find this camera useful:
Auto racing enthusiasts
Mountain Bikers
Sailors
Hobbyist videographers looking for those unique shots

People who will likely be disappointed and frustrated by this camera:
Pretty much anyone who thinks they'll be using it as a camcorder.
People who aren't really tech savvy and/or have an older computer
People who don't like to tinker and engineer solutions to make it do what they want.

Great, but not perfect.

Just got the camera last week and have managed to play with it in the pool. Once you get it set, its pretty darn simple to use. I'm very pleased with the video quality in the air. In water, the focusing seems a little soft. This is the sort of camera you turn on and leave on, so the ability to edit video is very important. The pluses of this system are the mounts are very good, the video captured in daylight has been very good, and the ability to get replacement lens, housings, and additional mounts is also great. Also, the system is cheap enough that you can take some risks with the camera and get some really fresh shots.

The largest minus this camera has is its lack of documentation. You would think a company that markets video equipment would have some videos on how to use their product, but they do not. No videos and the instructions are written on a massive sheet of paper that would be difficult to use in a breeze. Fortunately some users have created "how to" videos and you can see their stuff on Youtube.

This is my first couple of days video, I'll post an update in a while.

A great product for the money

I bought the GoPro HD Motorsports HERO for track use in my race car after seeing them installed in several cars in the paddock this last year. Everyone I talked to liked them, and with a sub $300 price I figured it was worth a try. I installed it with the roll bar attachment option for a resent track day at Laguna Seca, and was very impressed by the picture quality. Set at 720p / 60fps, the video looked pretty darn close to in-car footage you see on a TV broadcast. The wide-angle lens showed the actions of the driver clearly as well as a nice view of the track. Colors are sharp and accurate, and the auto-focus worked very well. It's pretty easy to use once you get acustom to the simple two button operation with tiny LCD screen that only shows the settings. The case and mounting seem very sturdy, and battery life has been very good. If you purchase a 32gb card you'll have plenty of storage for a whole day at the track. My only two issues are that when you turn the unit back on to start a track session, you need to re-set the video settings to where you want it - it should just default to whatever your last setting was. Also, aiming the camera is a bit of a challenge since there is no viewfinder or LCD picture display. You kind of just point it straight out toward the windshield and hope for the best. Luckily with the wide angle lens, you would have to be pretty far out of line to not get a good viewing area. Personally, I'd give up a little size and pay an extra $50 for a small LCD screen on back for aiming. Overall, a pretty darn nice little camera for the money.

not splash-proof

This camcorder is not really water-resistant or splash-proof. If it is splashed on, some water WILL get into the lens chamber through the gap between the lens protector and the rubber ring, fogging everything up and ending your fun for the day.

You can let the moisture out by taking the lens chamber apart(not a difficult task: just removing one screw). Based on my casual observation, I believe that it is unlikely that the moisture trapped inside the lens chamber can move further and reach key electric components to cause permanent damages; so technically you can call that "water-resistant."

However, if the lens is fogged up, the device becomes practically useless and it is hard to fix it in the field (better wait until you get home lest getting more water or dirt into the device).

An easy solution might be the VholdR 3300 Waterproof Case accessory. I just ordered one and will let you know how well it works.

I give it a four-star because I believe that Twenty20 was sloppy in designing the seal mechanism of the lens chamber. For a >$300 device, it is shocking that they attempt to use one cheap and not very tightly fit rubber ring to keep water out. They don't even bother to apply some silicon grease, which could have helped greatly in keeping water out. My $10 flashlight does better than that! In a nutshell, this device is not splash-proof and it could have been!

Although I give it a four-star, I consider ContourHD the best wearable camcorder on the market. Picture quality is very good and its operation is intuitive and simple.

Below I am also going to make a list of ContourHD's shortcomings. Please consider them more as a wish list since products from other companies are not doing any better.
(1) I was thinking about using it to record video during my long road trip, powered by vehicle power to USB adapter. It turned out that the device can't record video when connecting to power source or computer, and thus recoding capacity is limited by battery capacity.
(2) to be continued...

lens quality is mediocre

Overall camera design is good, especially big sliding button is very convenient to deal with, when using gloves.
However, the most annoying fact for me was blur on the left and right screen edges.
I've bought both ContourHD 720 and ContourHD 1080 models, and both went to trash can for the same reason.
Seems that lens quality is mediocre even for that cheap camera. That's the main "no-no".
And I'm not the single upset person with similar complaints on lens quality, if you go to vholdr support site, you will see plenty of other poor sods with similar issues.
Blur is either at the center of the screen or at the screen edges easily see at at any videomode.
Bought GoPro HD, which is less convenient and more fragile at handling, but at least has non-flawed image quality.

I like it

I'm 60 years old my eyes are not as good as they used to be and I know it's probably not right to compare the Contour HD to a full size camcorder but I also own a Panasonic AG-HMC40 and the picture quality of the Contour HD is pretty darn close (my opinion) to what I get with the Panasonic AG-HMC40. The Contour Hd actually does better in low light conditions. I also bought the water proof case for the Contour HD and took a few under water shots of my dogs swimming in a creek, I was amazed at how well they turned out. With a little imagination you should have a lot of fun with this amazing little camcorder.

Not happy, lots of distortion

I purchased the 1080P contour for an event at Laguna Seca. Everything arrived ontime and was all set for the event. After the event I setup the software for playback and every video I took had horizontal lines distorting the picture! Needless to say I was pretty upset. I called Amazon and explain the problem and it was very easy to get a replacement 1080P and memory card. I received the replacement units the very next day! Excellent service by Amazon.

I charged the replacement unit and tested it by taking a video of my son. It had the same exact distortion as the original unit! There is no distortion when it is perfectly still but as soon as you move it around with your hand it would have these horizontal lines that made the picture completely unwatchable.

I returned this unit as well and have not purchased another camera since. Very disappointed with it.

This is NOT the HD Helmet Hero your buying!!!

I ordered this, thinking it was the HD HELMET Hero as it states in the title. This is NOT true. The HD Helmet Hero comes with helmet straps for solid and vented helmets and also comes with a head strap for use without a helmet. The item I received was NOT the HELMET Hero, but the HD Motorsports version with the suction cup. Very disappointing... I will be returning this item for a refund.

Surprisingly good image quality, great wide angle view

I bought this from REI using the annual 20% member discount on a lark and it has turned out to be a great purchase.

The video quality is surprisingly good for such a cheap (relatively speaking) camera. The 720p is better than that from my Canon SD940IS, which does not even provide 1080p. There are many sample videos on YouTube from myself and others, just search for the product name.

I haven't used the still mode much, but the pictures do not seem nearly as good as that of dedicated still cameras (like the aforementioned camera).

I have not tried out the helmet mounts yet, though I did use the included head straps for a couple of videos. These turned out to be nausea-inducing, as I tended to turn my head a lot. I don't think the helmet mounts will be any better, as I would still be turning my head a lot in most sports.

I ended up ordering a GoPro Chest Mount Harness for HERO Cameras and the videos from that were much more stable.

I thought I would be using the 1080p mode a lot, but for the coxing videos I have been using this for so far the 720p wide-angle mode is much more suitable, you can see much more of the boat and the oars; also, at 60fps slow motion video would be much clearer.

The choice they made to leave out a display paid off in battery life - 2.5 hours of continuous on time is awesome! The control mechanism is fairly unfriendly, but you get used to it... not sure why they couldn't have put in a mode dial though, it wouldn't have been that much more expensive, even for the waterproof case part - Canon cameras have had this in their waterproof cases for many years.

I didn't even think about the sound, but after reading the product literature I have to say I agree with their comments about sound quality. Looking back over some other videos taken with still and video cameras I find that there is a lot of wind noise in most of them, whereas this camera in its waterproof case lets you hear ambient noise without the wind noise.

All in all, a great product. A little pricey, but great for what it does.

Does a great job, but...

I've used the HD Hero quite a few times now, and as the other reviews said, it does a very nice job. It's nice and compact, seems to be quite tough, and takes really nice hands-free POV stills and video. There are a few things I've had to look out for, however. One is that with the wide angle lens and no way to see what the camera is seeing, it's very common to get "warped" shots - ones where the horizon bends drastically up or down. It's the nature of the lens, of course, but something to look out for. If you can get it pointed properly the shots come out very nicely. The screen for settings is also barely usable. It's simple enough to use, but difficult to see. With the case on the buttons don't feel very positive, so once in a while I find that I didn't actually start the camera rolling. As a result just about every clip I take starts and ends with me looking at the camera to make sure it's on or off. Not a huge deal, but shouldn't be necessary either.

The other issues are ones that I think can easily be fixed by GoPro. First, the battery on mine is far more difficult to remove than any other camera I've had. It seems to be partly due to the slick coating on the battery label, and partly due to the way the battery snaps in. It's not a big deal when you're in the house, but out in the field changing a battery can be a challenge. Similarly, the memory card is a bit tougher to get out than on any of my other cameras. Again, not a problem in the house, but more tricky than it should be when you're trying to quickly swap cards so you can keep shooting. The gizmos that connect the camera to your helmet (I also got a bike clamp) are all plastic, and would benefit by a more rubberized surface or something. It seems like it would be very easy to over tighten the clamps (trying to get the whole setup to hold still) and break the plastic. I have a few ideas to work around that, but haven't had a chance to try them out yet.

Image quality is better than I expected for both video and stills. I saw the online samples, which are good, but the real deal is even better. Overall this camera is great fun to use, and since it fits in my pocket I find myself taking it with me often. If you want a camera that you won't have to worry about knocking around and getting wet, this is a great choice.

Good Product, Reasonable Price

As far as functionality, this product is fine on all fronts. It attaches sufficiently, it is easy to open and close, and it keeps your gear safe and dry. The brackets, while secure, could look a little nicer, but for the price you pay it's hard to complain. I was skeptical about spending so much less than one of the big brand names (Yakima, Thule, etc), but after receiving and using this alternative, I am glad I saved the money.

Bigger inside than it looks from the outside.

We recently celebrated the arrival of our second child, which immediately made our 2002 Honda CRV much smaller. We frequently go on trips to my wife's parents, who live about 2 and a half hours away. To fit all four people and a Labrador in our car, we had to put the dog in the back and find somewhere to put the luggage.

I've been thinking about a "torpedo" type carrier for some time now. I'm glad I found this model.

Positives:
Light and relatively easy to mount on the car.
The locks are made of steel and fasten in 3 points across the unit, making for a secure lock when closed.
No sound while using this on the highway.
I can fit my largest and second largest suitcases inside with room for another smaller bag.
Looks good on our silver and black Honda CRV.
Drove through rain and no water made it inside.

Negatives:
Barely fits on our factory roof rack. I should really drill two new holes in the unit to make for a better fit. While the mounting system is simple and secure, it should probably have been designed for racks that are farther apart. This is nothing a 3/4" drill bit won't solve. Don't let this scare you away from this product. As you can see I still gave it 5 stars!

Perfect Roof Box!

We purchased this box for our two week car trip to Canada this summer. We just got back after driving over 2000 miles and the SportRack Aero 1300 Roof Box was perfect. There was plenty of room for our two large roller duffel bags plus some small things. We had been looking at the much more expensive Thule and Yakima, but settled for this one since it was less than half the price. The mounting brackets are not as fancy as the name brands, but it does the job just perfectly. Our average speed was 75mph and we never heard or felt any noise or vibration. This roof box met all our needs and we had no problems.

When you need extra space on a budget...

I just bought this two weeks ago with my Amazon Prime and it actually showed up in two days! Ok, I know that's not part of a review but good info for those who use that. It came wraped in a plastic bag in a large box so it was in perfect condition when I pulled it out, comes with two keys for the latch system. A little clumsy feeling trying open it on the ground but worked ok when attached to roof of our Honda Odyssey. We just went on a road trip from Indiana to Keystone, SD. Along the way we hit rain at least 40 percent of the time, sometimes it felt like a monsoon. All we had packed in the carrier was a portable crib, a small stroller, a bag of 6 beach towels, 6 pairs of shoes, and some baby toys(enough to fill up the roof box). By the time we reached our destination I opened the box and there was a little water in the bottom of the box. I used about 3 paper towels to wipe it up after I unloaded everything. No other problems there and back(2,400 miles). I read on another review that someone used some weather stripping to seal it up better. Not a bad idea, but I was impressed without any. I wouldn't put anything of great value such as an expensive camera. It was made for ski and snow boards, so it doesn't matter if those type of things get a little damp. It was easy to install on the cross bars of my Honda Odyssey with the help of my daughter and a couple of step stools. It has a 110 pound weight limit and seems to be plenty for this sized box. I was able to position it so the tailgate opened with no obstuction and still see straight up through the moonroof. Also gas mileage didn't seem to be any worse. We averaged 25 mpg the whole trip. driving 65-75+ mph with 4 1/2 people and the back full of luggage. A good buy for the price. The bigger name brands cost way more and if you just need a little extra space, this just might do the trick. It fit my needs and budget. I'll leave a couple pictures of our van so you can see how it looks.

Seriously, you should not try making a connection with boys through Yahoo answers. There are a lot of predators here who would take advantage of you. They would also know about clubs you can join, where you can see who you are meeting face to face.

Question : Are snow tires worth it for a sports car?
I've got a small sports car and it's horrible in the snow. Will putting snow tires even worth it? Off topic answers or questions will be warned or ignored.

Answer:
Winter tires (not "snow" tires) are always worth it if you live in a climate that sees anything more than a hint of snow, ice or very cold weather.So-called "All-Season" tires are really 3-season tires. They lose traction at temperatures below 45-deg and are only effective in light snow when they have fairly new tread. Dedicated winter tires such as the Bridgestone Blizzak series, the Michelin X-Ice and similar products have tread designs and compounds optimized for use in very cold temperatures, deep snow and ice. In terms of traction in those conditions they are ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE better than even the best all-season tires. I live in Minnesota. I've been using dedicated winter tires for 23 years. Most of that time I have owned RWD sports cars. I work in a tire store where I have had the opportunity to drive just about every kind of tire on the market in all kinds of weather on all kinds of cars.Winter tires work! They will turn an undrivable car into one that will run circles around Subaru's. Get some Blizzak's and keep driving that car.

Question : What filter is best for snow sports photography?
I am using a D40 and I will be mostly taking ski racing/snowboarding photography mostly during the day but sometimes at night. Is there specific filters or setting I should use under these conditions?

Answer:
Keep in mind that when shooting where there is lots of snow in the scene, the camera will underexpose and you will have dark, murky photos instead of bright white snow. This is normal with any camera as the meter reads all the bright white snow as too bright and tries to correct for it by lowering the exposure. So add one to two stops of + exposure compensation into your camera before taking the shots outdoors. Check your monitor and histogram after taking some test shots to see if you are getting the look you want.steve

Question : Is there a place to practice snow sports during summertime, near Vancouver?
Im going to Vancouver the second week of july, never been there before.is there a place to practice snow sports near/around vancouver during my visit?

Answer:
Apparently Whistler boasts that their ski season lasts till late July. I have never actually went skiing their in late July myself. However they do advertise it. http://www.destinationsnow.com/whistler.html"Whistler has the longest ski season, ending in late July"Further details go here:http://www.whistlerblackcomb.com/index.htmIf I were you I would give them a call and see what the deal is. They say on their website late July. It wouldn't surprise me. There is still snow in the mountains that time of year, its just further up. The more into the interior you go and the higher the elevation the longer the snow lasts. Anyway, its located in Whistler, BC which is approx. 1hr 49mins or 123km away from Vancouver, BC. Best of luck to you and hope there is still some powder up there.
