Walking 10,000 steps

Terrific product, I wanted a pedometer that I did not clip on my belt but could carry in my pocket and track all of my steps not just those when walking briskly. I have been using the pedometer for about a month and it is very accurate. I put it in my pocket every morning and love to watch my progress in getting to 10,000 steps over the day. I highly recommend this product. I like that it has a digital clock to use all the time.

Omron HJ-303 GoSmart Pocket Pedometer

I've had 2 other pedometers that had to be worn on the hip to register steps; and I was not happy with either. When I friend told me about her GoSmart and how it only needed to be carried or pocketed, I was "sold". I have since purchased 2 more as gifts for my husband and sister and we're now in a friendly competition of "who can get the most steps in a day". Wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone else.

Great product, except that it doesn't work--investigation to follow

Bought one of these at REI yesterday. It's quite wee and slender and easy to fit on your belt / clipped to a pocket / in a pocket. It comes with a safety leash and clip as well as a belt clip (though the belt clip is rather shallow and will slip off a belt, hence the leash is nice).

Mechanically, it is, as advertised, very smart about identifying "walking" vs counting steps while driving or bouncing or whatever other activities you might expect a "cheap" pedometer to register improperly. It also seems quite accurate, though I haven't done any serious walking or climbing with it (see below).

After sitting about an hour working on my computer, I looked at the screen and found it said "ERR". This state proved unrecoverable until I removed the battery, which necessitated re-entering the date and time. Oddly my height and weight data persisted. The unit functioned properly for the rest of the day.

This morning I woke up to the same "ERR" state. I'm going to return the unit today and get another one. I'll update the review when I have more info but first glance might suggest a good product with QA problems in firmware. Implicit here is my assumption that REI (like Amazon) will allow the return without a lot of fuss, hence these are two of my go-to vendors.

The battery in the unit is a Panasonic. I have the experience that, for all their other virtues, Panasonic make the worst batteries available anywhere on the planet, thus I suspect some battery weirdness could be at the back of the trouble.

If other reviewers are correct and the only reset happens at midnight by the local clock, that does seem like a curious design choice.

Excellent product

I can't say enough good things about this pedometer. I walk quite a bit at work, and I wanted to track the amount. I don't like the idea of a pedometer that is limited to being clipped on; I wanted something I could put in my pocket and forget about. The Omron is perfect for me. In addition to steps walked, it also tracks steps walked at 3 or more mph, and converts to minutes and miles walked at this "brisk" pace. Easy to use, very accurate.

Great product

This is my first HRM so there was a learning curve on using the features of the product. I'm typically pretty good with electronics and functions/menus. For some reason it has taken me a little longer to get this one figured out. That said it works great, really helps me focus on the performance level of my workouts, I should have had one years ago. The workout summary is great and helps me track my progress. It took awhile to get used to the chest strap, it is not uncomfortable, but was different having a strap around my chest.

Good even for a newby

This is my first heart rate monitor. Bought it after comparing reviews, and I'm not disapointed. It is easy enough to figure out, and the instruction manual helps you get there quickly with good illustrations and descriptions, and a layout that helps you find what you're looking for. I've used it while doing ligher weight supersets as a fatburning/toning exersize, to keep my heartrate within the zone. It is simple enough to use that I was able to read a few targeted pages in the manual, fiddle with it for about 5min, then go get started. So far I have not had any problems with the watch losing contact, except for the first trial-run when I didn't put any moisture on the electrodes in the band.

Great monitor for basic use and with cardio machines

I was using a timex monitor that I got for cheap at Costco. It wouldn't work with the precor machines and I kept losing the signal. My trainer recomended buying a polar and replacing it and glad I did.

I get a reading as soon as I put on the strapband (with my timex sometimes there was a almost a minute delay before getting a reading even using heart rate cream on the strap). It works fine with all the precor machines and it is nice having the reading go on the machine and getting told the heartrate stats as well when I finish an eliptical machine work out.

There is one thing I dont like and I may just need to read up on it. I can't figure out how to get the time to show with the heartbeat. I also like to time some things and the only way I can figure out how to do it is with the lap feature. Not a big deal but I have the alarm sound turned to silent but it wsill still beep when I am outside my targeted heart rates which is annoying and embarrasing at a gym.

If someone wants a cheaper heart rate monitor go with this one. I wouldn't recomend any of the other ones that sell for cheaper like the timex, they don't work with the cardio machines and this does, and this one is also reliable.

Great product!

The Polar RS100 is simple, objective, does what it is supposed to do in a clear way. The most important thing about this product is the price, which is very good for the functions, appearance and quality.
Product recommended!

good but not great

Over all am happy with it now that I have finally got comfortable with what button does what on it. The menu setup of your max heart rate, weight, etc is horrible, and the instructions make it worse. Maybe I have just gone soft in this smartphone era but I now expect a good bit of correlation between button location, button label and button function. All that said definitely four stars, the basic function of it is always rock solid, and has done a great bit for my cycling in the month I have had it. Transmitter works seamlessly with all equipment in my local gym.

Note: the strap on the transmitter it comes with is not huge, I am 6' 185LB and only have a bit of slack left in it. If you are much over 200lb you will probably need a longer strap, try one on first.

Editorial Review :

Perfect for outdoor enthusiasts on a budget, the Garmin eTrex H GPS navigator helps you navigate your way through the toughest terrain. The unit is equipped with a high-sensitivity, WAAS-enabled GPS receiver, which locates your position quickly and precisely and maintains its GPS location even in heavy cover and deep canyons. The advantage is clear: whether you're traipsing through thick woods or strolling near tall buildings and trees, you can count on the eTrex H to help you find your way when you need it the most. And just like the original eTrex, this little yellow wonder is intuitive and rugged, with a lightweight housing that fits comfortably in the palm of your hand.

The eTrex H is a breeze to use, with five buttons on either side of the navigator facilitating one-handed operation. The four-level gray LCD display, meanwhile, is easy to read in a shade or daylight. And you needn't fret should the weather turn, as the eTrex H is IPX7 waterproof, so it can withstand an accidental splash or dunk in the water and still continue to perform.

Functionally, the navigator stores up to 500 waypoints in its memory for easy retrieval, with names and graphic symbols to highlight the selections. Users will also appreciate Garmin's exclusive TrackBack feature, which lets you reverse your track (up to 20 reversible routes) and navigate back to your starting point. And the automatic track log offers 10 saved tracks (with 10,000 points), along with the ability to retrace your path in both directions. Other details include a hunting and fishing calculator, sun and moon information, and a serial PC interface.

The eTrex H, which runs for up to 17 hours on a pair of AA batteries (not included), measures 2.0 by 4.4 by 1.2 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty.

Customer Review :

Great for the price!

I have been GPS shopping for a loooong time! I am only 15 so my mom told me I shouldn't spend too much on a GPS, for I would only be using it for geocaching.... Let me just say this is a GREAT starting unit! It took a while to get used to the controls and all but after a few minutes, my GPS and I are now acquainted. If you are looking for a GPS with maps and navigation, this is NOT for you. This is for people that simply want to go somewhere and get back. It is great for getting you back to your car! The only problem is the battery life because it is drained by the backlight which is ALWAYS needed to be able to see.

Geocaching GPS Perfect and fun

I didn't rate DU because I don't know what that is. My son loves this for just messing around and geocaching. Nice unit!

Rating :

A little too basic

Pros: light, small, fast to fix
Cons: No screen to display current position...that's a must have feature.
Best to get the next model "up"
The only way to know your current position is to make it a waypoint
(storage of which is then optional)

Rating :

Ok

It is a very good GPS and a good price for the people who are looking for basic GPS location.

Rating :

Good basic GPS

For finding your position in the outdoors this unit works very well. It is small and light so you can carry it climbing and backpacking without a problem. The accuracy is good and the unit easy to learn. It does not come with a cable to connect to a computer or very good information of what programs it will work with.

Women's POLARĀ® FT4 HEART RATE MONITOR :: Reach goals quicker and easier with your PolarĀ® FT4 Heart Rate Monitor. Track heart rate in target zones, personal improvements, calories, and a whole lot more. Graphically displays your target zone for easier viewing. Dual time zone, 8 languages, comfy heart rate strap.

Customer Review :

It's water resistant! Works great

Hey folks, I just wanted to add a bit of information based on some comments I've read on other Polar devices: The FT4, based on my tests, IS water-resistant and should work great to help you track your stats as you swim laps. I'll update this once I've used it for a few more lap swims, but both the heart monitor you wear on your chest and the watch itself are sealed and won't immediately flood and ruin if you take it into the pool. Only thing is, you probably don't want to be pressing the buttons on the watch while you're under water, which may mean you have to stop and dry off if you want to take a break in the middle of your lap swim.

Update: I have now used my FT4 several times to track my lap swimming. It works great! Don't press the buttons while you're actually underwater, but I have had no trouble at all with the 'pause' or 'continue' functions at the end of the lap, even with wet fingers. Oh, and - you don't have to wet the chest band before you put it on if you're going to swim in it ;)

I have the same beef as others about the FT4 - you can't see all your workout stats at once while you work out - you have to press the bottom right-hand button to change the display to heart rate vs. calories vs. workout time or what have you, and you can't see your time while you're working out (you can once you're finished and you click STOP to end the workout session...at this point you also get your upper and average heart rates and your time in the zone. You can also hit 'Pause' to see your workout time.) Basically, this little gizmo does what it's designed to do. It does make a unique double-beep when you're in your heart rate zone, which I find helpful.

A couple other details: the FT4 has a user-serviceable battery (some other Polar models don't, which means you have to pay $$ and ship the device to Polar to change the battery.) The chest band is fabric, as opposed to the stiff plastic of other Polar models, also. You can buy software to download the information off your Polar, but the software is $80 and you need an infrared reader for your computer. I haven't really explored this, as I use the [...] website to track my info and I just copy it straight off the Polar without downloading.

My one complaint is the difference in calorie burn between the FT4, my Garmin Forerunner and my GoWearFit...who knows how many I'm actually burning...but I do have a little bit of a formula I can use to convert from one to the next...

Overall, I'd say this device is well worth the money, especially if you're just doing casual exercise without the need for a GPS or an all-day calorie tracker. I'll probably buy another one should the one I bought break or wear out.

Nice HRM

I am enjoying my new HRM. I like the data saving (it's nice to be able to go back and look at the log when I have time). It is more of a brown than bronz or gold. When you are using the stopwatch/HRM, you can see your duration and time of day which is nice. But I wish there was an option to only see duration as the numbers when both are displayed are smallish. But the numbers are a nice size on the clock face. The strap is a nice fabric strap, easily adjusted and washable.

I didn't give it 4 stars because I think the color is not great, and the display of duration and time of day together makes the numbers hard to see when I'm running.

Good deal

I got the watch quickly. It was on sale, with shipping it was still less than I expected. I have used it and like that it tracks the time I work out and the target heart rate time. I only wish it tracked steps as well as calories.

Good choice

Bought it for my gf and she loves it, simple use and girl color and it's a polar whoever has owned one knows that is a good choice.

Great, basic watch and it's actually cute and not HUGE...finally!!

So my trainer suggested I get a heart rate monitor watch, but for one, they were still pretty expensive at the time and truthfully, not all that attractive. I didn't want some huge thing on my wrist, nor did I necessarily want to advertise to the world what I was doing! I just wanted something small enough to blend in yet hopefully cute enough to do the job. Then lo and behold, this watch was introduced, and what a great deal! One thing is, I actually thought for some reason that the strap was kind of a metal...it doesn't make sense that it wouldn't be rubber or plastic, but the photos--at least to me--make it appear like metal. On to the review!

I actually bought this watch in March but only started using it last week. It does all the basic functions. I don't know about you guys, but my primary goal was to see if what I was doing at the gym was negating all the crap I consume during the day at work (although, I eat fairly healthy. It's the desk that kills you). I find it slightly interesting to see how my heart rate fluctuated when I wasn't working out. It literally jumped back and forth between sitting at the computer to walking briskly up the hill to my car, then it shot up 15 beats while sitting in rush-hour LA traffic (ha-ha).

You get used to the strap very quickly (although it would be nice to not have one at all...I don't like struggling with it in the locker room before a workout but whatever.) It's not like it bulges out underneath your clothing, which is great.

Anyway it's not going to compile your grocery list or babysit your children, but it's a handy little device that does just what it needs to do. Oh and setup is a breeze too...you don't even need the guide, really.

This is a great little compass. It is well made with lots of functionality. I use it to align my telescope and its features really make that a breeze. It is a copy of the German compass which means the instruction sheet can be downloaded from the net.

Well-made, worth the money

It seems very well-made but can be a little sensitive and has to be placed on a leveled platform in order to be accurate. I'm keeping it.

Rating :

Amazing for the price

This is a Chinese copy of the K&R brand (German) series "Meridian" compass that sells for $150.

No, this compass does not have the precision German machine detailing of the $150 K&R model. For example, on the K&R compass the bezel (the part you turn) is machined, but on this compass it is cast metal. But the build quality of this $14 compass is surprisingly good - as in, way better than I expected.

If you are looking for a direct sighting compass with 1 degree (or better) accuracy, that is quick to use and virtually foolproof, this is the bargain of the decade.

It does NOT have declination compensation, but then neither does the K&R model for $150.
As the other reviewer noted, the luminance is poor. But the reality is that if it is so dark that you need luminance, then it is also too dark to use a sighting compass anyway - so what's the point?

Is it accurate? - absolutely. Durable? - yes. Would I bank my life on it as my only compass out in the wilderness? - not a chance. Is it a great compass for taking bearings on a family camping trip? - Perfect.

For the price, this is an astounding compass.
