Questions & Answers
Question : How to prepare for a half marathon in September?
I'll be running my first half-marathon in September and I have a few questions. Educated long-distance runners only please....answer whatever you can.1.) How can I keep my Breg knee brace from chafing behind my knee? On long runs it really gets annoying, but I can't run without it (I have severe runners knee...basically premature arthritis). It also tends to get really tight around my calf. Any suggestions?2.) Did you run 13 miles before your half marathon? If so, how may times and if not, how many did you run upto?3.) How often when training should I have a drink or something to eat DURING long runs?4.) Any running products (health drinks, GPS's, socks...etc) you would recommend?5.) I was thinking about wearing my running weights to the office once in a while just to get a little extra something. (I'm a graphic designer so I sit most of the day and I feel lazy) Is that a good idea? I've heard that wearing them while running is bad for your knees, and I already have bad knees as it is.Any other tips and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm super excited. Thanks so much!
Answer:
1. there is a product called body glide it may work2. no you do your long runs so that your next progression is the 13 miles.www.halhigdon.com has a great program for beginner3. drink 8-12 oz before you run and 6-8 oz for every half hour you run, more if you feel thirsty, cause once you get thirsty you have begun to dehydrate and then its to late. you can try sports gels, I usually take one with water every 4 miles. 4. blister free socks and as far as GPS I love my Garmin for training.5. wearing weights I have no idea and yes its bad to wear them while running, the force of weight coming down on your feet is 3x your body weight.www.runnersworld.com also has lots of good tips and so does www.coolrunning.comThe main thing is try any new products or clothing out on practice runs, dont use or try anything new on race day since you don't know how clothing will chafe you or how you might react to a new product like a sports drink of gel. stay well hydrated.Good Luck

Question : Would this knee brace be good for me ? i have Osgood schlatters and i play middle school basketball .?
http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2624047
Answer:
The question is why do you need/want the brace? ...are you experiencing any problem currently or with activity? The style you gave a link to is a good brace at a good price. I do like the adjustable velcro bands. I don't normally recommend over the counter knee braces because the amount of support is minimal, it is usually more mental stability then physical. ...but that being said, with conditions such as Osgood schlatters, using a band to spread the force across more of the muscle sometimes can help. When it comes down to it, the brace will not do you any harm.

Question : Can anyone in Australia tell me where I can buy a Magnetic Knee Brace?
It is a Dr. Levine product. My mother has one but can't remember where she purchased it from, and she'd like another one for a bowling colleague.
Answer:
Better - HELP - Have him read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies so he can help himself not need the brace. It deals with muscles, pain and referred pain. The odds are that the pain is coming from his quads (muscles in the upper leg) that are tight.A massage therapist can also help, but many of them do not know about how to get to all the muscles this book covers.

Question : they are trying to stop kids riding dirt bikes..?
This was posted on our district site, the letter is from Greg Robinson, Owner of Unadilla... Good Afternoon...forget the good, as our country has descended into lunacy. I have spent most of the day on two conference calls relative to the subject line above, and I must say I am rather concerned about the fate of our sport and industry. Not to mention our local communities for the further loss of jobs and $$ that our industry brings in each year. It is certainly that dire..believe me. As of yesterday, all the OEMs had to pull for sale all new youth minicycles and atvs for those under the age of 13...this under order of the CPSC due to lead content of plastics and certain metals. As of yesterday, a dealer or private individual can no longer provide parts or service, to these affected machines, in which there is a possibility that those same parts may contain lead...no oil changes, plastic, levers, engine cases, etc, etc..goggles, helmets, clothing, knee braces..you name it. You may think that is just for new machines, but it is for everything new and used. The CPSC also ruled that machines under 85cc are considered toxic to the health of young children. Effective yesterday, Honda has pulled replacement parts from their service system for these machines pending lead certification...this takes 400 days. KTM, Suzuki, Kawasaki, and Yamaha are doing the same thing. If you have a 1,2,3 year old machine, you won't be able to buy most parts for it very soon. Yamaha is sending out restrictions to its dealers saying that an 85cc bike can only be sold, and should only be operated by someone over the age of 13. Now to the fun part for us as a race promoter. Because the manufacturers are now issuing these guidelines, we as promoters cannot allow a youth under the age of 13 to participate for two reasons. We are allowing someone to participate in a sanctioned activity on a vehicle that has been determined by the manufacturer and the CPSC to be unsafe for that age level. We are allowing someone to participate in a sanctioned activity on a vehicle that the CPSC has determined is a toxic substance. If you think I am joking, consider the following MX Sports is considering removing youth classes from the Loretta Lynn's program, GNCC, and ATV Nationals...we run all three of these series and I can tell you that these classes make up over 1/3 of our entries and more than half of our attendance. The AMA will be forced to ban youths under 13 from any AMA amateur or pro competition due to legal ramifications. The same will apply to local districts and sanctioning bodies, as insurance will not be available to cover this exposure. The lifeblood of our sport are these kids..if they cannot participate, they will find something else to do, and we will not get them back. They will not race, watch, or buy products. That means Mom, Dad and older brothers/sisters won't be there either. Unadilla would most likely not participate in any form of amateur racing..with only half or less of the entries left, it wouldn't be financially possible. DO I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION YET! There are two efforts going on right now to get a temporary stay granted by the CPSC for "Off Road Vehicles." The MIC (Motorcycle Industry Council) and Missouri State House Rep Mike Sense(#4 in line in the MO st govt) are both developing grass roots letter campaigns through websites to develop a ground swell of support for this stay. Keep in mind this is only temporary, and unless a Federal injunction or legislation is developed, this isn't going away. There are several opinions floating around on this subject saying that our thinking is flawed and that only the sale of new units is affected...if that is the case, why are helmet, goggle, sneakers, sunglasses, OEM parts and accessories, and dealer service being pulled for these units??? I will leave you with this..if indeed this is overblown, and we are right that we shouldn't be affected by this, it still doesn't mean that we can't/won't be sued by someone using this logic, and worse yet, convince a jury that the above is true. If it gets that far, you will have spent nearly a million $$ in your own defense, just to prove you were right all along. IS IT WORTH THAT TO YOU? I will get you info on the two websites, and I encourage you to beg everyone you know that rides, owns, promotes, or attends an off road sporting event to get everyone they know in the same manner to fill out one of these letters...Every Mom Dad and Kid should individually enter their name. Then they should contact their local representatives too. Thanks for listening, and please do not think you can't make a difference..contact your local representatives as well..explain the economic impact this will have..educate yourself on this subject as quickly as you can. Greg Robinson VP Marketing Unadillla Motorsports (c) 315-725-9537 greg@unadillamx.com Please note, although nhere is a link= http://www.tomself.com/
Answer:
Hello Greg,This is incredibly disturbing, and I thank you for bringing this to my attention. I will do my best to make my voice heard on this issue. The intrusion of a "nanny state" legislature rears its ugly head again.I have been a rider for 40+ years, raced for 30+ years and cannot imagine not seeing the kids on the mini-bikes at all the events. But, your post did not include the links, can you please re-post them? Maybe your question ran out of text space.

Question : need help with ankle support?
left ankle has been in a walking cast(that ends right below knee)for about 3months due to pain of a 2 year old injury...its killing my knee wearing it...my doctor gave me a lace up brace as well for around the hoouse..will wearing it and combat boots be sufficient enough for everyday use?http://www.americawear.com/images/products/Tactical/Israeli-Combat-Boots-350.jpgmore info on situationhttp://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AshrhbeiGlzmYvOUkS3wNiDsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=201004 14181705AADSVBt
Answer:
Listen to your doctor.Your knee is probably hurting because you are altering the way you walk by having a walking cast on. It should subside when you walk in regular shoes again.Lace up braces are generally worn with sneakers.

Question : can you wear a don joy knee brace while playing soccer or any other contact sport?
in march, i had a donjjoy black brace with hinges on the side, it ws soft material all around except the hinges, they were hard plastic. The ref told me i could not play because it could cut someone but it was pretty smooth. i need to wear this brace in a couple of weeks im waiting for it to come http://www.donjoy.com/index.asp/fuseaction/products.detail/cat/1/id/174 do you think i can wear it. it says professional athletes use it including college athletes. But i dont know if they will let me use it.
Answer:
yes you can. it is a approved medical item. the ref per usual is wrong. bit of advice. the brace creates heat. please use talcum powder. this will make brace easy to remove. if any body cries the blues. note from doctor.. may be worth getting just to shut the whiners up.
